We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Borges and Miriam McDonald and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly and Miriam, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
PWR WMN was born out of the constant frustration we felt when searching for a women’s blazer that not only represented us, but served our needs as modern businesswomen. Our own need and desire for this led us to create our own version of women’s blazers with outside and inside pockets for function, and a unique style that represents us in the ways we want to be seen. We have entrepreneurship in our blood. Both of our families are entrepreneurial and have set an amazing example for us. Once we knew that the blazers we made would not only be a great asset to us, but to other women around us, we knew we had to jump in and get started. Miriam and I are both very passionate people. When we say yes, we mean YES. And when we decided to start PWR WMN, that meant fully investing ourselves and our own savings into it. We believe in this so much, we have no doubt our sacrifices and big risks will pay off.

What should our readers know about your business?
Miriam works 6 days a week in sales (we used to work together) and I am a new mom! We both jumped into PWR WMN about a year ago and haven’t looked back. We’ve gone from college friends, to co-workers, to best friends, and now co-founders. We are a business that was created for professional women by professional women! What sets us apart is the fact that we are from the corporate world, taking the things we have learned and wish we had, and applying it to our designs. Our idea is not new, but we felt like women’s clothing was missing something that every woman needed––POCKETS!! We wanted to create blazers and pants with functional pockets so that our customers would be ready at all times! We are not removed from the environment in which these blazers and pants are worn, so we know what women need, and we don’t ignore it––we use it! We’ve been able to get to where we are through hard work and resilience. We face every obstacle head on with stubborn persistence. Because of this were able to be here! Along the way we’ve learned many things. The most important, however, has been to invest in ourselves and our education. It’s hard to justify spending money when you’re trying to make money, but the old adage “you have to spend money to make money” is very true. We want our children to see our strength and will power. We want to be an example to them in the same ways our own mothers are to us. We’d like the world to see our drive and passion and to know how much we truly care about empowering women through their clothes. It’s a privilege to know that PWR WMN will be present during a woman’s most important and life changing career events.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would take them to Bishop Arts! We would get brunch at Odd Fellows, dessert and Emporium Pies, and lunch at Paradiso. We would also take them to White Rock Lake for a hike and picnic! I would also take them to walk around downtown and uptown! if its the weekend we are for sure going to the farmers market!
