We had the good fortune of connecting with Abby Cameron and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abby, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I graduated college with a degree in psychology, the plan was to get my license in therapy. I wanted to help kids, but what I didn’t know at the time was I am highly empathic. I worked with children and heard about their experiences and then I carried that heaviness with me. The emotional toll was too much.
However, I’ve always been the go to person for my friends and family. When someone is going through a challenge its usually me that gets the phone call. I had a friend once tell me I should be a life coach. At the time, I didn’t know what a life coach was, but it piqued my interest and I soon discovered it was exactly what I wanted to do. Helping others navigate the challenges they face in their lives.
My approach to coaching is unique so I knew that starting my own business would be the best way for me to effectively teach my method to others.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me and my practice apart from others is not only my unique intuitive approach, but my content is completely customizable. I don’t have a one package fits all methodology. I listen to the needs of the people or the businesses I work with and create a program to meet those needs. I have found that change really happens when we take a hard look at what needs work, and strategize from that perspective.
I truly see myself as a field guide for life. Whereas other coaches are guiding clients from the sidelines I am walking on your journey with my client. A field guide knows the landscape and provides guidance in helping others discover that landscape, but are there for every step of the journey. When we partner in coaching, I’m not watching you from the sidelines. We deep dive into your life and help you find your way.
I believe there are few reasons for my success. First and foremost my own life experiences bring a level of expertise to the table that isn’t true for everyone. I have been through very challenging and traumatic situations and I use that wisdom to help my clients. Utilizing and trusting my intuition when it comes to others has helped clients make significant changes, but the biggest reason is probably because I practice showing up with positive intent. Everyone has a light, a purpose and value. I see them in that place already which immediately creates a level of trust and empathy.
I work with individuals and businesses. When it comes to businesses, I feel I’ve been successful by working with employees on an individual level and then getting leadership to commit to creating a culture of inclusion and self-care. Instead of working from the top down I take the approach that we have to work on everyone and that methodology is working.
The biggest challenge has been navigating the gray area between therapy and life coaching. I am not a licensed therapist so it is my ethical duty if a client brings a concern to me that is outside my scope of work to refer them to a therapist. Occasionally, a client needs both.
What I want others to know about Indigo Coaching and the work I do is that you are your own worst enemy. We spend so much time worrying, analyzing, and ruminating on information that isn’t even our business. The only thing getting in the way of you is you. In addition, most of us have been told what to do, what to think and what to believe for so long that we have no idea what we want. So walk around life far from who we really are. But you have a choice. You can believe that life happens to you or you make life happen. Everyone is capable of living a rich, abundant and wild life and I can show you how to get there. Having been through so many challenging experiences in my lifetime it was in doing my own work that brought me into my best life. If you do the work, it works.
I offer personal coaching for women to see where they’re stuck in their lives, and then begin to identify their own RAW life and teach them tools to live that life. I raise awareness around the transformational power of gratitude through various classes, lectures and my Gratitude Tree Project. I’m an educator and host in person and virtual courses and workshops for women, and I consult companies and organizations and customize programming to create a healthy culture of thriving people.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the outdoors so I would make stop for an urban walk in Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano. It’s a hidden gem in the city and great place to get out and take a few deep breaths.
I enjoy taking guests to the Nasher Sculpture Center for something unusual. Creativity sparks so much joy and the Nasher offers a unique experience for the senses.
We would eat at The Porch, Breadwinners and Snooze Eatery and definitely stop in for a cocktail at The Midnight Rambler.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Wayfinders community. My life coach training was with Martha Beck and her community of change makers.
