We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Cartwright and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, why did you pursue a creative career?
The reason I wanted to pursue an artistic career is mainly because of all the traveling I have done. It really all started when I was in the 5th grade and we where traveling to Tanzania, Africa. My dad had his Dslr camera and I picked it up and just started taking pictures. I loved how anywhere you went you could capture a moment in time from your perspective. It was also the coming home at the end of the trip and uploading your photos and going through them and editing them to your own style and vision. Through out my life traveling has brought me so much joy when doing photography. I was able to express my creativity through just a click of a button and was able to show others and the world what I was able to do. It was really when I started college when I knew that I wanted to pursue photography full time. I started my college journey at San Jacinto College which I actually was deciding to major in Culinary arts. However after the first semester , I knew deep down inside that was not my calling and passion, it was photography. So , I switched my major and started taking the basics and classes I needed to start my photography major. After San Jacinto College, I transferred to University of Saint Thomas – which I then continued my studies with the Glassell art school . It was amazing to be at a school where art was the main focus. I got the tools and education I needed for my photography career to really take off. It was after graduation when I think it really hit me that the question off” What do you want to do with your degree” sunk in. I had the option of working at a gallery or photography studio but , I just loved the idea of having my own business. However I wanted to do more with just having my own business. Based off of how my education journey went it truly has inspired me as a person and to share my passion with others. One of my good friends mom actually told me about the program ” Texas Teachers” and she taught art at an elementary school. She told me how rewarding it was to teach others something your so passionate about. So after a month from graduating I decided to sign up and start my education journey. I am now almost at the end of teaching my very own art class and hope to do so starting next school year.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston has so many things to do I don’t even know where to start. Well some things that I love to do on my free time is go to a Astros game. Especially on Fridays. they sometimes have theme nights and they also have fireworks at the end of the game.
Another place that i really love is Eado or East Downtown Houston. There are tons of rest restaurants ( rodeo goat is my favorite , its a burger spot) and tons of bars/ brewery’s for you to walk around and enjoy.
When in Houston you really cant forget about are amazing museums , there are tons of art museums, science that has the beautiful butterfly garden, even the Houston zoo.
One thing where also known for is the Houston Rodeo, however you have to come in march. The fun thing about the rodeo is not only the amazing performances they have but the diversity of ranch/ rodeo life but as well as the food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
