We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophia Ellis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sophia, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?

The most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make was taking a break from film production for  my mental health. Filmmaking is my passion. Often times, we are so pushed into accomplishing our dreams and goals that we ignore our mental stability.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

My art is storytelling. At the beginning, I was focused on telling my story. Now I’m focused on telling others stories. The most proud I have been is creating a pitch deck for National Basketball team. It shows that I am fearless and will take risk. And that’s how I got to where I’m at today. Of course, it’s never easy but when you do something you love, it makes the journey enjoyable. One of the main lessons I have learned along the way is to always be a student. You never stop learning your art even when you become an expert. I want the world to know that there are so many stories that haven’t been told. I’m ready to help others to tell their stories no matter how unorthodox they are.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Dallas has some of the most hidden treasures. A few spots I would like to highlight are the Dallas Botanical Garden, Nature and Science Museum and Joe Pool Lake. For a little adventure, I would recommend a sport event like Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, or Dallas Wings or visit the amazing art district in Deep Ellum. If you have time for Brunch, I would definitely check out Soiree for some live music and alcohol-infused coffee or ESO Mimiso Bar that has a variety of mimosa and a savoring menu.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I would like to shoutout my family, friends, and supporters. The people that has been with Melanin Behind the Lens from the beginning until now. I always say I’m nothing without those individuals that push me, give me ideas, offering their time and services, and never allowed me to quit. Every pieces of work I produced or write is for the audience, not myself.
