We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazsmine Caprie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jazsmine, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I believe I always had this inclination that it was meant for me to work for myself but I can’t say that becoming an entrepreneur was my first thought. Looking back, I can see that I never really felt fully aligned with working for someone else but “entrepreneurship” was not yet my focal point. I guess I was in the process of “awakening” to my destiny, so to speak. I was only a teenager for most of my jobs, then I went off to college, but deep down I felt the pull to be more creative. When you’re a creative, you want more freedom of expression and that’s not what a typical employer expects.
A lot of times I struggled to understand why it was so hard for me to stay employed in one job but looking back, I now realize it was because my mother was in the military and we moved every few years. It was a confusing time for me but as a teen, I wasn’t really trying to figure it out yet. I was just being a teenager. As time went on, my life circumstances and my personal nature slowly revealed that my employment path probably was not going to be the path of the average person. I wanted something different even though I wasn’t quite clear on what that something was. Now just a few years later, I am the CEO of Jai Smadi Skin Care and honestly, I never really saw that coming. At some point I knew I wanted a lifestyle brand named Jai Smadi but I never considered skin care as being a part of it. I thought I was going to work in the fashion industry because that’s what I gravitated to as a child and later when I went to college but it seems God had other plans for me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a teen and during my young adult years, I really struggled with hyperpigmentation. It took an emotional toll on me and as a young adult, I began mixing various products together to see which ones worked best for me because I wanted to start using all natural products on my skin. I began really focusing on healing my skin for myself because none of the over-the-counter products worked for me. Around this time, the pandemic began and I had already planned on moving out of California but I wasn’t certain where I was supposed to move to. I didn’t have clarity so one night I prayed and asked God “Please show me where you want me to be, Lord”! To my surprise, when I woke up the next morning a job I applied for in Dallas, TX reached out to me and asked me to come in for an interview. I started packing my bags to move to Dallas that day! And then, the pandemic started! All of a sudden, things were crazy!
By the time I got to Dallas, the interview had been cancelled because of the pandemic. I was staying in an AirBNB for a few weeks and during that time, someone mentioned a girl who was making body butters in another state and that her business was pretty successful. So, one day while I was mixing products for my own skin I started thinking to myself …”let me start making Turmeric Butter Moisturizers to help other people remove their hyperpigmentation too.” So I did just that and two years later, I now have seven products under Jai Smadi Skin Care! I started small only offering my products to my friends and family, and now I offer Butter Moisturizers, Butter Scrubs, Face Serums, and Soaps to help heal my customers’ skin conditions, such as acne, hyperpigmentation, & rosacea. My love for healing the skin has now inspired me to become an esthetician, so I look forward to expanding my business and just keep on growing and evolving as God guides me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This question is actually perfect timing because I do have a friend that’s coming into town and I have a list of places I’m interested in visiting. I happen to love animals, so we’re going to start by visiting the Dallas World Aquarium and the drive-through Safari, which is about two hours outside of Dallas. Since it’s their first time coming to Dallas I also want to take them to 560 by Wolfgang Puck. Lastly, since we love art and fashion, I’m excited to take them to the Dallas Museum of Art and the Dallas Contemporary!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Acknowledgment is so important to me! First and foremost, I want to give a shout out to God because without God what is life? Without God, life has no purpose and without purpose life has no meaning! Through God I have found my purpose and am finding my peace by helping others find theirs. Second, I would like to shout out my mom, Dr. Capri Cruz, the most important person in my life and the reason why I am who I am today! My mom is my motivation, my mentor, my confidant, and unofficial therapist. She’s actually a real therapist who helps people heal their lives by creating a life they love. She is amazing and I love her dearly. Without her there would be no Jai Smadi. Lastly, I would like to thank ALL of the people who helped me realize that my skin’s hyperpigmentation was not only part of my beauty but also part of my story.
