We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim & Heather Kostka and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tim & Heather, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is SCARY. I think it’s something that most people try to avoid. Comfort, security, stability are typically what we as human beings tend to cling to, and risk is the absolute opposite of that. I think we both were wannabe risk takers early in our careers and married life – we took promotions that lead us all over the country from Georgia to Las Vegas, Nevada, to Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas, Texas. But there was also the caveat of a very stable job opportunity, the security of a salary, and the promise of company growth.
When we decided to start our own business, it was a huge leap of faith. We left comfortable, well-paying jobs. We said goodbye to the typical corporate 9-5 rhythm. We jumped into a life that we knew absolutely nothing about, and it was 100% risky, and somedays, it still is! But at the end of the day, we are taking a bet on ourselves, our capabilities, our passion, and our drive. We are working towards a life lived on our own terms, and so far, it has been worth the risk!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We believe in quality products and devoted customer service – that is at the heart of what we do. We truly see our business as an opportunity to serve our community by using our gifts and our talents. What we build for these families will be part of their history – and that’s an honor we do not take lightly.
I think that’s what sets us apart as a business. We take pride and honor in what we build for these families, and while we are working on their pieces, we hope that we infuse happiness and positivity in the work we provide for them. We hope that our time with us is filled with excellence and joy. Not only do we provide them with a beautiful piece, but we hope they walk away knowing that each piece was made with love especially for them.
Was it easy? No. Is it easy? No. There is always 100 things you have to be thinking about as a small business owner – from operations to marketing to creating a vision to the future to work life balance. There is always stress – ensuring that you are keeping your clients happy, balancing all the financials, making sure you are moving your brand forward. What helps us overcome the challenges is each other. We are super fortunate to be a husband and wife team who uplifts each other, problem solves together, and re-focuses each other to remember why we do what we do.
What I hope the world knows about our brand is that we truly care about each and every client that crosses our path. We work so hard behind the scenes to make it an enjoyable experience and do our best to thoughtfully think through each build from their perspective. Are we a perfect business? No! But we do our best to serve our clients well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Most of what we do revolves around our kiddos!
There’s SO much to do in the DFW area!
Activities for kids: Perot Museum, Dallas Zoo, Fort Worth Zoo, Clyde Warren Park, the trollies downtown, the Aquarium, the National Video Game Music, Crayola Experience, Kidzania, the Arboretum, Six Flags, Great Wolf Lodge, Epic Waters, the Cove at Little Elm, Heard Museum, Topgolf, the Discovery Gardens, Andretti’s – the possibilities are endless!
Our favorite places to eat: Starwood Cafe, Local Yocal, Hutchins, Kitchen Masters, Best Thai.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
SO many people! Our parents, our family, our friends, our neighborhood, our community! The list continues!
We are fortunate to be surrounded by so many friends who are also walking this entrepreneurial journey: Phillip & Eileen Blume from Blume Photography, Kristin Aquino-Pham with Kasama at Ellijay, Gina & Ernie Lopez with 5 Rings Financial, JD Tomlin with the Tomlin Team, Tom Sherman with Benchmark Mortgage – Just SO many people!
