Meet To’Ni Wheeler | Nonprofit Founder & Serial Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with To’Ni Wheeler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi To’Ni, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
If I am being honest, risk are terrifying. The thought of not knowing what to expect can drive a person insane. However, as time goes by I’ve learned risk helps build confidence in decision making. Throughout this pandemic, as an organization we had to take numerous risk and as well as switching from in-person to virtual. These new challenges were difficult at first but as we continued to have patience and commitment, we were able to grow and expand in our membership and community service opportunities. Although scary, risk taking is necessary for development and growth.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
One By One Mentoring is my biggest accomplishment. We’ve been in the game since 2019 and we are still growing and expanding! I could lie and say it has been an easy journey from then to now, but it hasn’t been easy. There has been plenty of days were throwing in the towel would’ve been the easiest option to do. No one has a straight line to success. The hardest part is feeling like you have to have everything perfect from the beginning and being fearful to ask for help because you don’t want anyone knowing you don’t know what you’re doing. Honestly, the people we’ve helped, the children we’ve encountered , and the relationships built are the main reasons we decide to keep going every day.
One By One Mentoring was started on the belief that all it takes is one person to make a change, whether it’s big or small. Everything we do is from our hearts. We all share a love for children, education, and giving back to the community. After graduating from Langston University in December 2018, I worked in the nonprofit industry to gain experience and to see how the mechanics of it worked. Six months later, I launched One By One Mentoring with the help of my family and close friends.
O.B.O. is a safe place for not only the youth but for other young individuals like myself who yearn for a sense of belonging and/or want to make a difference in someone’s life. We’re a social organization with a mentoring program. Everyone needs a mentor, a friend, or someone to talk to everyday. Life is tough, but with the right people in your life, it makes it more accessible.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friend enjoys eating and traveling so I would definitely take her to surrounding cities such as Houston, Austin, or even San Antonio, which are 3-5 hours away from us. There are plenty of hot bunch spots we could hit up and try out different types of foods and drinks.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This was a difficult question to answer because over the years we have encountered numerous people that have continuously supported us during our journey. So I will have to say thank you to all the community organizations and leaders within the DFW area that has welcomed One By One Mentoring with open arms.
Shoutout to all the members of One By One Mentoring for dedicating their time to be servant leaders within the community and sticking with it the organization through all the changes and adversity we faced in the past few years.
