We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin & Carissa Beaird and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justin & Carissa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I don’t think there was really a thought process, we had just had our twin girls, and I didn’t want Carissa to have to go back to work, so she helped me get small mowing gigs here and there. It was very much so a “spur of the moment”/“crap we gotta figure something out moment”!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Justin here- I actually have my career as a firefighter to thank for the exponential growth of our business. Firefighters network like you wouldn’t believe, if you need something done, we probably have a guy who does it one the side. We have had many other firefighters who have had a hand in solidifying our business in the commercial mowing game. I started mowing out of the back of my 1990 4Runner, and a captain who worked at my department got me my first commercial contract, which led to me being able to buy my first zero turn mower. It’s quite a privilege to get to do the job, along with our landscape business. It’s even more of a privilege to have people who genuinely want to see you succeed.

I think what (or rather who) I’m proud of is my wife. She can (and will) outwork any man I know. Plus, she has to put up with me ALL DAY LONG, so that’s saying something just by itself. We have built this business out of a lot of hard work, tired nights, and stressful weeks, but her and I have really strengthened our marriage going on this sweaty, hot, dirty endeavor together. It hasn’t always been easy, losing contracts, bad customers, and inclement weather all throw a wrench in the grand plan, but Carissa has always had my back and been right next to me, rain or shine (and I mean that literally).

Lastly, the one biggest lesson I can pass on about really any business at all, is that YOU are your best or worst asset. You’re going to have to advocate your value to customers, as well as put in the work. There’s no easy way to make a business successful, it either works (or doesn’t) because of your attitude, discipline, and work ethic. We’ve only succeed in a market that anyone can work in because we have that attention to detail, the drive to work when others won’t, and the pride in our work.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We love trying new places! Thankfully, there’s always new places to try and things to do in Dallas. I would probably take the opportunity to take them to a new spot, and definitely hit up lower Greenville for some of our favorite eats. Definitely spend an afternoon at Klyde Warren Park and the surrounding area! Our favorite spot in Dallas is hands down San Martin Bakery so that would be an absolute go to.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our parents for sure, there is NO way we could run this business without their support, both emotionally and physically. Carissa’s mom Les is invaluable to us, as she allows us to be able to work together and not have to rely on strangers to watch our girls. We love you mom and thank you for all you do!
