We had the good fortune of connecting with Rita Giles and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rita, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe the most important factor behind the success I have gained, has been superb customer service. I personally believe it is absolutely crucial to the success and longevity of a business, especially an up-and-coming business. Between the facts that I am a natural caregiver & I strongly believe great customer service (or even mediocre customer service) is nonexistent overall, I take great pleasure in providing something to my customers that they never would have guessed or expected. I have received many compliments that have included phrases like “… And she was so professional!“ A persons first thought may be, why would that be worth mentioning within a review or comment. The answer to that is extremely simple… Because great customer service is a rarity. I have received such horrific customer service from every type of business… In person, on the phone, via chat, it just doesn’t matter. It’s often really bad. And because it bugs me to no end, it comes so natural to me to provide exactly the opposite.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The slogan to my company is, “Unique desserts for every palate”. I specifically make incredibly delicious desserts, but desserts that are completely unique and conception. For example one of the top selling cheesecakes is my Peach Cobbler Cheesecake. This is a creation developed completely in my mind and has remained massive hit to this day. One of my other extremely popular cheesecakes is my Island Pineapple Cheesecake. This cheesecake was created in my mind in less than two minutes, staring up at the ceiling in my kitchen one day. I didn’t do a “test” cheesecake for the Island Pineapple. I literally created several that evening and sliced them up and sold every slice the very next morning and it has been in high demand since. The very first cake I ever sold is steal one of the most popular cakes on my menu…The Real Strawberry Cake. Visually it’s had numerous upgrades, but the outstanding flavor remains the same. Everything started with my original Cheesecake Brownies. There is currently five variation of those but everything started there. I was the baker for the family function. From Thanksgiving dinners to our random card parties… I only ever had to bring the desert. An old family friend would comment, the same exact comment each time she was in attendance… “Rita, you need to sell these!“ My response remained the same for quite a while which was, “who would buy my brownies?“ She was adamant and persistent so at the end of one of those game nights, I thought to myself, why not. And that is literally where everything began. I called the originals, my babies. The most difficult part for me hands-down has been how do I actually open a store front. The thought of how that is actually done is mine blowing to me. I think about many things and one of the forefront thoughts is always, how to protect my proprietorship.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a Michigander in Texas. Therefore, I’m not well-versed in the best “to-do‘s“ in the DFW area. I will see if it took place during the basketball season and Detroit Pistons were facing off with the Dallas Mavericks, then that would be a no brainer. I absolutely love the NBA and I adore the Detroit Pistons! With it being the basketball season, which would mean it MAYBE slightly cooler temperatures, maybe I’d schedule one of those small boat cruises. I’ve been a guest on one or two since I’ve moved here and those are cool especially if there’s a great DJ aboard. I tell people all the time, I don’t participate in an out door activities here in Texas unless it’s between December and February. Otherwise I despise the weather here… Pretty harsh I know. But I authentically love the cold and snow so it’s been extremely difficult for me weatherwise here.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have to say my daughter, my son & even my ex-husband would be those at the forefront of the support and encouragement I’ve received. My daughter is a writer and editor by trade, so she is always my immediate go to to proof things whether it’s a post on social media or a description on my website. She often offers marketing ideas as far as press releases, social media, blogging, etc. My son is an overall supporter! He’s the voice that is constant in telling me, “Oh, you can do this! You definitely will be a millionaire!“ My ex-husband a.k.a. great friend has been championing my success for many years, to this day. He is another person who has been continuously filled with support and belief in what Desserts Galore By Rita SHOULD be.
