We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always enjoyed working with my hands and making people or things beautiful. I have ventured in cosmetology, painting and art, refinishing furniture, just any project that allows me to work with my hands. Being able to sit back and enjoy any finished product is the best feeling. When I decided to start making candles, it just fit. The joy doesn’t come from just pouring the candles, but designing the labels & marketing material for my workshops, creating content on social media and then knowing that someone gets to enjoy my products in their home.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Starting this business was just what I needed to help me get a feeling a normalcy after battling postpartum depression and anxiety. I have a 3 year old daughter and a 7 month old son. After making it through some of the darkest days of my life, with the help of my husband, therapist and doctors, I knew I needed something to focus my energy and anxiety on. Learning a new trade is never easy. You will never know how hard and frustrating it is to just get a candle to stay lit, and then the excitement you feel when it works! I’ve learned that putting yourself and your products out there can be scary but doing it is worth it! If you want to be in a boutique, just ask! Show your products and what you have to offer! Worse they can say is no right? You may get a lot of no but then one day when you get the yes, and when your products and brand are in a boutique, you’ll be glad you stepped out of your comfort zone and allowed yourself to fail. I think being okay with failing is the biggest lesson I have learned this last year. Realizing that PPD and PPA can happen to anyone and being okay with the struggle, failing as a mom and allowing your family and friends to carry you though. Being okay with hearing no, I’m not interested and keep pushing forward every day. It’s worth it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in the DFW is the best because there is something for everyone! My first spot would be the Japanese Palace, this hidden gem on camp Bowie where you can get the best hibachi and sushi in Fort Worth in my opinion. If they had kids, we would go to Dream Park which has wonderful trails, an amazing giant playground and on the weekends food and snow cone trucks. We would drive out to Dallas one night and enjoy the most delicious dim sum at Bushi Bushi Dim Sum in Addison and stop by this awesome little bar, coffee shop and bookstore called The Wild Detectives.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to recognize my husband, Jairo. He has supported my venture through and through. I would have been completely lost with setting up a website, payment process, contracts, and so much more with out him. He is also my biggest fan and hype man!
