We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikael Vaughn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mikael, how do you think about risk?
Risk and opportunity go hand in hand. In my experience, there have been times where my goals and aspirations were big steps for me. It took a lot of courage and self determination to risk putting myself out there to even be considered for gigs that I’ve only even dreamed of being a part of. I’ve grown so much as a person, and a professional because I chose to act instead of wait around for opportunities. I’ve also met so many amazing people and have a fantastic network because of my ability to find humility in risk taking situations.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I got where I am today by never saying no to the work and collaborations that support my end goal. The jobs may be unpaid sometimes, but the experience gained and the networking make all the time and energy worth while. I have learned so much from the people I’ve collaborated with and it definitely keeps me on my toes.

It hasn’t been an easy road. I moved to Texas after finishing college with no direction or passion for a certain career path. One day I thought back to cutting my sibling’s hair as a preteen and then going on to cutting hair for fellow students in college and how it brought me so much joy to make people feel their best. That epiphany was just what I was looking for. I found my passion for editorial, runway and glam while in cosmology school and it only continues to grow.

One thing lesson I learned is that I control my own destiny. I had a rough experience with my first salon that almost tore me away from the industry all together. I was held back from realizing my full potential and was expected to hide my true self. I turned that disappointment into drive and haven’t looked back.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came into town for a week long trip we’d explore the different parts of the metroplex and definitely hit up the drag shows in Oaklawn. The drag scene in Dallas is uplifting, inspiring and a great time!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the love and support of my amazing partner Layton. He has been by side encouraging me to do everything I could ever dream to do. Also, both of our families go above and beyond to celebrate our goals and aspirations. His side of the family happens to have three generations in the beauty industry, so there’s a lot of amazing encouragement and advice coming from them as well. Finally, I am lucky to work for a salon that is amazing about encouraging me to push my creative boundaries outside of my everyday clientele which keeps my passion for the industry thriving and constrenewed. My network is my rock.
