We had the good fortune of connecting with Zion Pullman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zion, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
When I was very young, I was inspired by watching television cartoons for years, I always asked myself, how did they do that? As I went from middle school to high school, I experienced a lot of opposition from people who caused me to go to a low place in my thinking. Still, at the same time, I always wanted to draw, make comics with my characters, and eventually begin animating. This was like a form of expression for me to process what was going on at the time.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been drawing for at least 14 years, (since 2008) and since then I was inspired by many different characters from movies and cartoons. It took me a while to find my art style in that period. Believe it or not, I am self-taught! My animation style took at least 7 years to develop, My style has developed over the years from studying 2d animated shows (animated in Adobe Animate or Toon Boom Harmony) and trying to apply the same animation techniques that were used in these shows. Challenges I faced along the way had taken a long time to resolve, from syncing characters speaking to the audio, using 3d backgrounds with 2d characters, having action scenes, and many more. Also, having the right music throughout every scene. One thing I want people to know about my creations is they are to inspire and help people. Life can be hard, but we need more messages on how to deal with certain things that happen. That is why I use my experiences that I didn’t understand at first, to be of help to others through my art.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My suggestion on where to take my friend(s) is to Downtown Dallas, the Meyerson where the symphony plays, and to Northpark.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Significant support for my entrepreneurial growth is from a man named Arthur Porter, he owns an organization called Dallas Designing Dreams, which helps people accomplish whatever goals and visions they have in their hearts. He mentored me on how to use my brand years ago when I started. I want to shout out to my aunt for giving me an array of options for promoting my business and ideas. And my absolute biggest mentor (on the animation side) is a man named Sandro Corsaro, the creator and animator of a Disney xd show called “Kick Buttowski” which inspired my animation style.
