We had the good fortune of connecting with Yvonne Olguin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yvonne, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have ALWAYS been so fascinated by balloon decor. Balloons are present at almost every event we attend. I started seeing the want for balloon garlands at even the simplist of parties and I thought to myself, “maybe I can do that.” I started watching YouTube tutorials and instantly became so impressed with the techniques that the artists used and quite honestly techniques I would of never thought existed. I quite frankly had been practicing the techniques without material until I joined my friends balloon class and that’s the moment that I found some initial confidence to start offering my balloons to my friends and family. Word of mouth is SO powerful especially in this industry and I give all my clients, no matter the order amount, the importance they deserve. I didn’t necessarily start looking into balloon decor to eventually become a balloon stylist, but rather to explore a new hobby. Little did I know my “hobby” would turn into a passion of mine.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

Every balloon artist has their own unique style and ways to build their garland. You can very easily tell when someone is passionate about their work and style. That’s major and should be looked at when searching for your balloon stylist. I build all my garlands as I go because not one project is the same as the next and should get their very own moment. I’d be lying if I said I never compared my strategies to another colleagues, but that’s the thing, as I’ve gotten more inquiries and more opportunities, I’ve realized what works best for ME and that it’s not a one size fits all. I’ve been SO fortunate enough to have fallen within the circle of friends I have built in this industry because they have truly given me all the resources needed for anything I might possibly need for my upcoming events. I cannot stress that enough. My friends are most definitely not gatekeepers and want to help others succeed, something they didn’t have a few years ago in the industry and they’ve truly set up a path within this community to back each other up. I’ve always been a big believer that the energy you give is the energy you receive. And I have been fortunate enough to have received nothing but support!

If anything, I would like for anyone who stumbles across my page to see passion behind my work. To know no matter the size of job, it’s of most importance to me. I truly have built a passion for my balloons, and YES it’s frustrating sometimes, but at the end of the day I enjoy what I’m doing and that’s the best takeaway from this experience.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly, I’m probably the worst person to ask for recommendations as I’m a big homebody and Netflix and Chill is my ideal activity to do on a Saturday afternoon. BUTTTT, on those rare occasions that I do, I would most definitely take them to Bishops Arts District and eat our way through the area. Then possibly go to Margaret Hunt Hill area and see the most breathtaking views of our city. Honestly, I cant give an itinerary of plans since I like to do things spur of the moment, but if anything if you haven’t taken the moment and overlooked our City’s Skyline, you are missing out and I encourage you to go, especially at night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

My father deserves a million shoutouts. We don’t see eye to eye on almost anything and we tend to butt heads, but he’s always been so supportive of my dreams and aspirations. Since starting my Balloon Decor business he’s been there willing to help in any way possible and constantly asking about my upcoming events, taking my photos, and giving ideas on future things I could create.

In reality my immediate family and close friends deserve recognition because they’ve been my backbone and have promoted my work before I had the confidence to do so. They’ve pushed me into exploring new ideas I didn’t think I was capable of creating. They believed in me before I ever did and deserve all the recognition!
