We had the good fortune of connecting with YG Flaco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi YG, why did you pursue a creative career?
I would like to think that my career chose me. Music has always had my full attention regardless of what else was going on around me. I’ve tried other trades, some of which I excelled in, but I wasn’t happy. Nothing satisfies that hunger like finishing a song and having it sound exactly as planned. It’s a risky business but in a sense that’s the thrill of it. I can’t see myself working a 9-5 for the rest of my life, so I’m glad I was given the artistic gift to create music. There has never been a time where I didn’t want to be a rapper, I’m destined to pursue this career. And for that I’m grateful and optimistic.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m young but I’ve always had a very old soul, and that’s what sets me apart. My music sticks out because of not only the subject matter but also the beat selection, tone, flow and so on. My versatility is also another factor, scrolling down my catalogue you won’t find two songs that sound the same. Being versatile allows me to work with many different artists’ regardless the genre, which in turn has helped me develop a very diverse fan base. The road to now has certainly not been an easy one, I’ve been laughed at, looked over, dissed, lost friends, and even family. What keeps me going is the faith that I have within myself. As long as I get in the booth and make myself happy then thats all that matters. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that everybody isn’t going to like YG Flaco and that’s ok. I don’t go into a song thinking about how I can please every listener, I make music to vent, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my family. They’ve always supported my dreams and have been my biggest fans. That’s a luxury that many artists don’t have and I realize that. My Pawpaw most importantly, he bought me my first mic before I even had a computer to work from. He believed in me and he invested in my dreams at a young age. That love and support set the foundation for me to become who I am today.
