We had the good fortune of connecting with Yakira Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yakira, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process of starting my own business was finding something that I really loved doing and make an income while doing it. I have previously started business just because I was curious and eventually ended the business because I did not enjoy or have any interest in it anymore. I’ve always wanted to be my own boss, I do not enjoy working for someone else and this year I decided to take the steps to change that. I’ve previously installed wigs on myself and my sister and I always wanted to become a hairstylist I was just scared of failure. I soon realized that being scared of failure would never lead me to success, and all business owners take losses. I decided on a specific date I was going to stop working, I also made sure I found hair vendors and had all the products I needed to complete installs. My thought process of starting my business was basically just me taking a leap of faith!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a hairstylist who specializes in Wig installs and quick weaves or sew-ins. I think what sets every hairstylist apart from each other would be the custom service and vibe you give off while servicing your client. Yes your skills can set you apart from others as well, but ultimately it’s about the service. Every client that I service has a overall great customer service experience and we always have a good time while they are in my chair. What I am most proud of is how quickly I’ve learned how to perfect my craft. I’m also just proud of myself for becoming a full time hairstylist, it’s a big change from working a 9-5. This process was not easy because I had to invest in myself and trust that it would all work out. When I started I started with 0 clients, I just had faith that it would soon grow. I’m pretty sure everyone has a dream but only 10% of people actually take the steps into making that dream come true! The lessons I learned along the way would be to work even when you don’t have work. I would have 0 clients for a day but I would still make content, I’d still work on my business plans and stay focused. In todays world we live in creating clientele mainly from social media and creating that content helps tremendously! I want the world to know that my brand and craft is constantly changing and growing. What I also want my world to know about my story is that I literally started with nothing and was able to turn that around with dedication and faith!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love brunch and day parties! We would definitely stop there first but also take them to the ball downtown that is a great experience! All around I’m a fun person I just love having a good time. There are so many fun places to see and visit in the dfw area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout of course would go to the one’s who support me, even if it’s just a share, comment or a like. The ones who sit in my chair and choose me as their stylist definitely play a huge part! I’m forever grateful for the support and clients that I have received.
