We had the good fortune of connecting with VON and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi VON, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I think I had the idea within me to do music to any level, regardless if I saw it as a career option or not from a young age. I remember when I was younger, I saw people like Juice WRLD, the SoundCloud Era artists blow up super quick, like overnight, and I think that was the first time I actually realized that if you want to do something in music and you think you can do it, then you should try it. I think anybody who has a passion in anything should try it even if it’s just for fun because you never know where it might take you.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I think sets me apart from others, especially people who make music like I do at a young age, is the practice aspect of it. What I see a lot on social media of all these people who produce, rap, whatever it is, I feel like instead of nailing down a sound, or some sort of niche, they put out whatever they’re capable of making at that moment, good or bad. I feel like I’m different in that way because I’ve spent multiple years behind the scenes, making rough drafts of songs that never have and probably never will see the light of day, because I didn’t think they were good. So, I kept my head down, until I found a sound that I thoroughly enjoyed, and that’s what I stuck to. And most of the people that give me feedback about my music is that it does sound good, but it’s obviously not professionally done. That’s my next goal, to get a semi-professional setup. I don’t think the process of pursuing anything is sunshine and rainbows, whether it’s music, or sports, or some other passion you may have. I’ve definitely had times where I’ll go weeks or months without making anything because I feel blocked, or not creative, but then the good days feel just that much better. I think the secret to overcoming challenges like these is being okay with stepping away from whatever you’re working on and taking time to yourself, even if that means laying in bed and scrolling on TikTok until three in the morning. That’s definitely a good lesson I’ve learned in this whole process.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t know, I think my town is actually kind of boring, but I guess if I had to pick a place to eat, I would probably say Hutchins BBQ, or really any Barbecue place around here. It’s Texas, there’s not many bad Barbecue places here. I think a lot of stuff in downtown Dallas is fun. I like going to concerts there, especially the small venues, it’s always cool to go see live music.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would have to thank my mom, first and foremost. She is always trying to give me ideas, most of which I forget about, but she has also motivated me to be persistent in what I do because I think what I do is important to me. I also want to appreciate everyone who not only listens to my music but honestly tells me what they think about it, good or bad. Criticism is always good.
