Meet Victoria Martinez | Photographer & Videographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Victoria Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Victoria, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When it comes to creating a business, it all starts with a vision, but to bring that vision to life you have to take risks. Taking risks scares us, which is normal, but without taking risks, we will never know whether we will fail or succeed at something. It’s always a 50/50 chance. For my life/ career, taking risks has taught me lessons, good and bad, meaning it has led me to succeed and fail at things. But I never let my failures outweigh my successes. For example, if I had never taken the risk to spend 2/3 of my savings on a camera, my business would not be up and running today.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is considered fine art imagery that focuses on true to skin tone and vibrant colors. I love to aim for wide angles with symmetrical dimensions. And I love to capture sentimental moments. What sets me apart from others is that I am determined to document memories. I can feel the emotions that come through the lens when I’m photographing or videotaping a wedding, a quinceañera, a baby shower, etc. I’m proud and beyond grateful that I have made it this far with my photography business. I was just a scared 21-year- old who never would’ve thought she could develop such a talent and passion for photo and video. I never thought I would be offered multiple opportunities to photograph weddings in Mexico. I would not have gotten this far in my career if it wasn’t for other successful photographers and videographers for seeing my potential. It wasn’t always easy. I started off with just having one photoshoot every 2 months, still doubting myself and wondering how I was going to succeed as a small local photographer when I wasn’t booking many photoshoots. I began to build my portfolio, create connections, create content, and slowly make my way down to helping with weddings. Second shooting with other photographers was risky, especially when they did not know me well, I was very much introverted, and I feared that these photographers would not like the way I shot, but most of them did! I treated their wedding as if it were my wedding and put my creativity to work. I had to overcome being shy and learn to communicate in the wedding industry. It’s one of the biggest lessons I have learned during my career. Having great communication between you and your client and having communication with other vendors allows wedding days to flow smoothly. I’ve learned that when wedding days don’t go as planned, we must improvise, create backup plans when something goes wrong. My career has taught me how to work under pressure and how to be a quick thinker. I want the world to know that my brand was not built overnight, but it was built on hard work and creativity. My vision is not yet complete for my brand, considering that I have only had my business up for 2 years, I have more work and dedication to add to more people’s memories as I am building my creativity at the same time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were to come visit me for a week, I would plan to take them to a few spots that I know of.
Monday we would go take a walk or a run at Trinity Overlook Park. Later that day we would go eat and drink at a restaurant in bishop arts called Eno’s Pizza. Tuesday we would go to check out the Dallas Museum of Art, and possibly take some pictures at the District Arts in Dallas afterwards. Wednesday we would go to a restaurant and bar called Sky Blossom. Thursday, we could plan to visit Deep Ellum and eat at a Korean BBQ place called Kiwi Japanese BBQ.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to my family for supporting me and my business from the start! And I’d like to give thanks to those who have given me advice and have helped me develop my skills in photography and videography!
