Meet Valdez Valdez | Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Valdez Valdez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Valdez, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Pursuing my interests makes me happy. And my interests range far and wide.
I went to college to study broadcasting and journalism, but ended up with degrees in advertising and public relations. I’ve hosted a radio show, done some acting and tried standup comedy.
When I graduated college, I didn’t want to leave so I went to grad school at the University of Texas at Arlington college of business. Graduated again with a master’s in human resources management.
All the while, people would ask me what I was trying to do. I was all over the place and why couldn’t I pick one thing?
The answer is, I didn’t want to. Why should I have to pick one thing? I was pursuing my interests and having a great time. I didn’t know it then but all the things I doing and learning, all those experiences, would all come together.
As a small business owner, I have to wear a lot of hats. I have to be a content creator, business manager, accountant, laborer and networker. I’m a white collar worker and a blue collar worker. I’m getting full use out of my communication and business degrees..
Being a lifelong student has worked out well for me. Learning and trying new things makes me happy and I plan to keep doing it.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets my business apart from the others around me is the work I put into my online presence. I moved to a new city last year and have had to establish myself in a new market.
In doing my market research, I found out there are plenty of handyman businesses around me but they aren’t very active online at all. I’m sure they get plenty of work. Word of mouth is powerful. But their absence online has been a huge advantage for me I’ve been able to grow quickly.
Another thing that set me apart is having found my niche.
The Mountin’ Men specializes in hanging things that need hanging. We hang TVs, curtains, shades, ceiling fans, lighting fixtures, mirrors, frames. There’s plenty of demand for those services.
It’s important to know what you’re good at.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would check out the breweries. Eccentric Brewing Co is one ofe my favorite places. They have live music weekly and comedy shows once a month.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh gosh! I could name so many people who have contributed to my success. Even now I have great people around me who support me so much.
My professors in college were great supportive mentors.
My friend Al gave me a place to live when I moved to West Texas.
I owe thanks to my clients who refer me to the people in their networks. They connected me with an interior designer who now refers me to her clients.
And the biggest shout out of all goes to Suzanne, the wonderful woman in my life. She believes in me and builds me up more than anyone ever has. I’m so glad I found her.
