We had the good fortune of connecting with Val Spurger and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Val, what are you inspired by?
I am inspired by other entrepreneurs in the beauty industry that have become successful. I look up to others that started out small, like me, and now are opening other locations for their businesses. I know if they are capable of being that successful, I am to. It inspires me to see others doing great and drives me to stay focused because my time will come.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My original business name was Beauty in Distress started in November 2018. In 2021, I then changed to Beauty & Love Lounge. The beauty industry is anything but easy. It has taken time, effort, patience, and a lot of determination to get where I am today. When I first started out, I had no clientele and was working on a commission basis. Building clientele and maintaining a steady clientele is the hardest part in the beauty industry. Posting my work on all social media platforms and taking pride in my work has helped me overcome the challenge of retaining good clientele. When you do great work, it speaks for itself and people are going to ask, “Girl, who did your lashes?” word of mouth is the best way to gain new clients in this industry. If your clients are happy with you, they are going to refer their friends, family, co-workers, even strangers to you. Every day I am lashing I’m perfecting my craft and trying to do better than the day before. You are your own competition. Lessons I have learned along the way are not all business is good business, charge what you are worth, people will pay your prices, and always maintain great customer service. The client may not always be right in some cases, but as a business owner you do want to make sure your clients are happy. I want the world to know that I am not finished my brand is only going to get bigger from here. I am excited for what is to come. I have so many great ideas and plans in motion, so ya’ll keep a lookout for Beauty & Love Lounge!!!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely have to visit the Bishop Arts District & Trinity Groves area, cute trendy areas, with tons of places to shop, eat, & drink. Thats a must. I’m a big foody so a lot of eating & drinking is going to take place. LOL
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to Tiffany Hunter, without her my business would merely be a dream. When I first thought of going into business for myself, she really gave me that push to get it going. Tiffany was by my side through all the choices from color schemes, services, logo designing, and marketing ideas.
