We had the good fortune of connecting with Ty Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ty, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When you’re an employee, someone else is determining the value of your time and effort. That never sat well with me. I also like control. Good, bad, or indifferent, I want to know that there wasn’t a naysayer that prevented me from trying something new or a different way to solve a problem.

What should our readers know about your business?
We own, operate, and develop single-family rentals and communities. My architectural background and belief that good design not only has functional and aesthetic benefits for the end user, it also equates to better profits for the company. We are also obsessed with customer service. In a world full of AI chatter, overseas outsourcing, and automation, the world is suffering from poor service. My dream would be to scale like Apple in terms of maintaining high quality design and great service. Culture is also important to us. Everyone in our company approaches their work with a lens of innovation, integrity, and ownership and we like what we do! Finding the right teammates has been the hardest part. When you’re growing your business, every person makes a big impact so one bad hire can really slow you down. My partners and mentors have been great about sharing tools that have helped us review our candidates better and filter through the noise and resume embellishment.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The great thing about Dallas is that it has pockets of varied personalities. Oak cliff has a specific vibe, uptown is great but different, and same for Deep Ellum. If you can, definitely, hit up a Mavs or Stars game. The energy is fantastic and the event is family friendly, especially the Mavs. You gotta check out the new Rangers stadium if you’re a baseball fan and of course, America’s football team is nearby. We have so much good food in DFW that you could literally spend your entire trip visiting restaurants. Do some research there. There’s decent shopping at Northpark if that is high on your list of things to do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
So many people to thank. I’m sure I’m going to forget some people, so apologies in advance! Definitely my family growing up that instilled in me a work ethic, pride, honor, integrity, and manners. My fifth grade teacher for exposing me to art and Mrs. Howard for teaching me that excuses don’t count. Architecture school for conditioning my body and brain to work 80 hour weeks for 5 years. My wife for supporting me even though her personality is more conservative and does not like risk. My kiddos for being ok with dad working a ton. The really good people that I’ve encountered in my 19 years of professional career. So many to thank there. I love surrounding myself with awesome people and learning from each other. My partners and advisory committee for their mentorship. All my past employers for their willingness to take a bet on me.
