We had the good fortune of connecting with Tucker Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tucker, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I am the 6th generation to return back to the family ranch in Throckmorton Texas. Growing up on the R.A. Brown Ranch taught me how to think outside the box, work, earn, save, and invest. Have that mindset always had me thinking of how to improve things. My parents also told me at a young age that after I graduated high school, I would have to leave the ranch for two years. Then if I wanted to come back to the ranch, I would have to return with a business plan that would help grow the ranch to support another family.
Our family has worked for generations to produce high quality, safe, and nutritious beef. It was an easy thought process for me on what business I wanted to bring back to the ranch. I am in my fourth year of business, and it has been a blast to watch it grow. But I believe the best is yet to come.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Since 1895, our family has upheld the tradition of ranching, guided by the motto: “Keep the ranch in the family, and the family in the ranch.” This year marks our 50th Annual October bull sale, scheduled for October 9th. Though I’m not the pioneer, as the 6th generation on the ranch, I’m deeply inspired by those who preceded me. Growing older, I am increasingly humbled, recognizing the immense toil of my ancestors in shaping our present. Through relentless perseverance, they weathered droughts, the Great Depression, and two world wars to sustain our legacy.
Agriculture is changing faster than it every has before, and it is the slowest it will ever change again. That excites me for the future of ag. We have a growing world population to feed, and it is up to agriculture to do that. Will there be challenges? Absolutely. But for those that are looking to do things right, I think there will be lots of opportunities for the next generation.
One of the looming hurdles that we will have to face as an industry is bridging the gap between producers and consumers. If you don’t tell your story, someone will tell it for you. That has been happening for way to long in the beef industry. Someone else has been telling our story, and they haven’t been telling it correctly. That is why I’ve leveraged social media to connect with beef consumers, debunking misconceptions and showcasing the enduring spirit of the American cowboy. Over the past three years, my social media presence has grown, reaching nearly half a million followers across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Through these channels, I offer glimpses into the daily rhythms of ranch life, affirming our dedication to producing a safe, cherished product for the world’s tables.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would have to start by putting their shoes on the ranch. Showing them the sound science that we use to improve our cattle genetics. Show them how we are breeding cattle that are more efficient at turning forage into great tasting beef! I would also have to cook them a ribeye steak that was from one of the animals that we raised over a mesquite wood fire.
I would then take them to the Fort Worth Stockyards. Walk them on the same bricks that my great great grandfather walked when he started one of the first commission companies. There are so many choices for great food in the DFW area. Joe T Garcias is always a place that I like to take people if they haven’t been there before. Then there are countless BBQ spots that have fantastic food. I would have to take them to a rodeo in the Stock Yards. I would try to plan it during the Forth Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, so that we could catch a rodeo in Dickeys Arena. We could even watch the Ranch Rodeo, where the R.A. Brown Ranch crew competes.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank my parents, Donnell and Kelli Brown, for always pushing me to become better and to always do things right. I also want to thank my wife, Karley Brown, for always supporting me through my wild ideas and dreams. Finally I want to thank God for his guidance and patience with me.
