We had the good fortune of connecting with Tracy Lamont and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tracy, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Most of my life music has been my main priority, many times over spending time with my family; over going to work too lol. I used to think that’s what it takes and maybe it does for a period of time. Actually I wholeheartedly believe that some sort of isolation or focused dedication to improvement is essential to an artists growth. I just spent more time in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber than I probably should’ve. I used to feel like I had to spend every second thinking about music. Now I see how embracing all aspects of your life is critical not only to the music but to yourself. Personal development is the number one thing we shy away from but, it’s typically the disconnect between the life we want and the life we have. Now I have hard stops. I will set maybe 2-4 hours to work on music each day then the rest of the time I read, call or spend time with friends/family, exercise, play playstation, just hang out.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started writing raps in 2001 in Manassas, VA. I would put tape over old cassettes and record my favorite rap songs over them DMX, Luda, Jadakiss, Dipset and write and rehearse with those tapes. My family moved just outside of Charlotte, NC to Harrisburg in 05-06. That’s when I picked up production. I started on FL Studio then went to Ableton when it came with this Midi keyboard my pops bought me at the time. Been hooked on it ever since! I played the upright Bass in my middle school orchestra in VA, there I learned to read and write music. Rap has always been a passion of mine. I produced a number of mixtapes under the name “Capo Young” from 06-13. Really that was me practicing when I look back. The music was not great (lol) but I still see the potential when I go back and search it up.

2015 In college at North Carolina Central in Durham, NC is when I decided to change my name to Tracy Lamont and take things more serious. I released my first project under the new name, titled “92 Til'” and was able to land on The Source, AllHipHop and many more popular blogs at the time. Since then I’ve been able to open for Kevin Gates, Audio Push, Snow Tha Product, and Curren$y as of late. I reached over 100k streams DSP wide and been able to sell 100s of albums direct to consumer through physical CDs, my website and bandcamp account.

Growing daily is the focus. Making music I’m happy promoting and reaching out to the fans directly through eblast and DMs sometimes just to say wassup. We throw friendsgiving yearly where we invite friends and fans out to our home or another setting to eat, kick it and just have a good time. It has been a long journey, and yes it is challenging but, eventually you learn to do the hard things well. If you’re not willing to fail or do things outside of your comfort zone odds are you won’t get where you want to be. I am not exactly where’d I’d like to be but I’m definitely on the way. Embrace and enjoy the journey early

Virginia’s Tracy Lamont is an artist creating eclectic music for the masses, never confining himself to one lane or sound. Calling Lamont an Artist is just the beginning, emceeing, beat making, singing and producing, Lamont’s versatility and impact in the studio makes him one of a kind. Tracy Lamont was introduced to music at an early age and the impact would shape him as a person and an artist, moving forward. From the jump Tracy’s parents would play an eclectic mix of music, from Missy Elliot and Jay-Z to Kirk Franklin and Kelly Clarkson, it isn’t just hip-hop that flows through Tracy Lamont. It’s Rap, it’s Gospel, it’s Soul, it’s R&B and truthfully close to everything in between that can be felt in Tracy’s Lamont’s music. As Tracy grew older he found himself singing in church choir, thus adding even more versatility to his arsenal that we hear today. Writing songs at the age of 9, the young prodigy also took on playing the Upright Bass for his school orchestra. Practicing almost daily this forced Tracy Lamont to learn to read how to read music. Lamont’s father would play a focal point in Lamont’s music education getting him his first keyboard. Lamont already curious and fully in love with music and its creation, began experimenting with producing and creating his own sound. After graduating high school and making music with a myriad of groups Tracy Lamont left home to be free and be himself.

Fueled by love and motivation Tracy Lamont hopes to leave the listener with both and some knowledge after listening to any of his tracks. In 2015, Tracy began the year by releasing his debut album “92 Til” on his birthday. The album a tribute to the signature sound, the creation of the project was a learning process for Lamont but also a declaration of the path he’s set for himself to this point. Tracks like “Ashtray Full of Roaches” and “Space, Funk, Flow” both popular in their own right shows what Lamont brings to the table. He continues to refine his performing chops rocking the stage in places like Seattle and North Carolina solidifying his cross country and eclectic appeal. Tracy Lamont is looking to expand in 2020, between modeling, producing for more artists, releasing merchandise and much more, Tracy Lamont has no intention of stopping and wants you to grow with him.
