We had the good fortune of connecting with Torie Wiley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Torie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
You have to take a risk to be an owner-operator contractor in the CDL industry. Sometimes you have to put your loved ones on hold to become a successful owner-operator. It doesn’t matter if you own one commercial vehicle or a fleet of trucks; they are three significant variables you need to meet to have a consistent flow of income and become successful in the business:
1. Hire a professional, qualified and reliable driver.
2. Always keep your commercial vehicle in tip-top shape at all times with maintenance.
3. Set aside a budget for rising fuel costs.
If you can survive these significant variables, you are on the right path to success. I have missed many life events such as graduations, birthdays, and personal events because I wanted my business to succeed and run smoothly. Taking risks is a primary key to life because you need to fail to learn how to grow successfully.
What should our readers know about your business?
Wiley Corporation is a logistics company based out of South Florida, District Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. We aim to be one of the top logistics companies in Florida and in the Washington Metropolitan area. Wiley Corporation’s primary focus is working with established freight companies. My company has a contract with NFI and FedEx Custom Critical. Eventually, we will aim to bid for larger contracts in the industry. What sets me apart from others is I always push people to their potential because I believe everyone has a better version of themselves. I love to help and educate others based on my experienced. When people work for my company, I don’t look at them as paycheck because I value each employee and treat them as any human being.
I’m proud of how the Wiley Corporation is flourishing and building a fantastic support team. I’m also proud that I created the 18 Wheels Podcast geared around the CDL industry. I’m very blessed to have my co-hosts on this podcast, such as Lamont Jackson, Turrie Smith, and Chanita Thompson, to help educate others and give everyone their perspective in the industry. I’m excited about featuring future merchandising, such as Alkaline waters and energy drinks.
The challenge I faced working in my industry was growth. I came a long way in the industry by thinking that materialism and superficial people were ordinary. But as I changed my circle of people, I started to be introduced to people who could give me the knowledge to become a successful businessman. My mindset changed instantly to revolve my circle around entrepreneurs and business owners to help me succeed. As I transitioned from one lifestyle to another, I learned that if you don’t make mistakes as an entrepreneur, you will never know how to grow and never understand failure. I have never been a quitter, and this is the motto I have always lived by once I transition my mindset.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend Lamont Jackson and I always have a great time no matter what we do. If he were visiting the area, we would go to Hardrock casino, golfing, jet skiing, play basketball, and search for any business expos to network. We like to have fun, but at the same time, we try to figure out new ways to grow as entrepreneurs.
In the past three years since my divorced, I used that time to find my peace, whether through traveling, finding a new hobby, or building business relationships with people to help me clear my mind. My new hobby is golfing, and I enjoy being in Florida. I have developed some phenomenal friends in Florida. I love how it’s a free and diverse state, compared to where I’m from, the District Of Columbia. To me, the interesting people are open-minded, optimistic, and have a lot of knowledge to give, from growing a business to becoming successful in one. I’m grateful for building new business relationships and changing my inner circle for the best. I will always love the DMV area, especially being born and raised in D.C. Now it’s time to bring the D.C. swag to South Florida.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to my family, the Wiley Corporation Team, 18 Wheels Podcast Team, Lamont Jackson, Kashawn Fraser, and Ernesto Lee.
