We had the good fortune of connecting with Tor Crittenden and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tor, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always said that I “accidentally started a business” because I kind of fell into the business side of photography after loving the creative side for so long. Suddenly people were asking me for photoshoots and when strangers started asking, I realized that I needed to get some systems in place!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a wedding photographer in a saturated industry, it’s hard to stand out. What I pride myself on as a business owner and brand is that I ensure everyone is safe and celebrated when they enter my online or real life space. Everybody is represented across race, religion, sexuality, gender, national origin, etc. There is no limit!

Nothing has been easy in business or art. From nailing down my style, to creatively challenging myself despite having paid client expectations, to learning marketing and sales, etc. etc. etc…. it seems the list never ends. I think that my singular best quality, my desire to learn, has helped me to overcome challenges at every step of business (including running a business while going to law school & passing the bar exam!). Being committed to lifelong learning helps me to push through when business is slow or when I’m left uninspired by my art. It helps me to get good at SEO, but also to learn new editing styles and compositions. It also ensures that I provide great client experience because nothing I offer is 100% a repeated process. I believe every wedding & client is different and it’s my job to LEARN them to ensure their experience is best for them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Phoenix, you have to embrace what the city has to offer! There are lots of fun outdoors activities (depending on the time of the year); you can float on the Salt River with gorgeous views, hike Camelback Mountain or Piestawa Peak. You can take a quick drive up to Sedona for gorgeous red rock views and hikes.

As for food, you have to understand that Phoenix is a mix of cultural foods & ‘aesthetic’ restaurants. I 10000% recommend hanging out in downtown Phoenix or midtown, I avoid Scottsdale like the plague.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Despite the predictability of this answer, I would not be who I am without my parents. Growing up they were pretty strict, but I never doubted their support. Their saying YES anytime I wanted to go to the softball field and practice throughout adolescence, turned into encouraging me to go to law school and in business as an adult. They went from authority to best friends and I rely so heavily on them for advice, support, challenge, and so much else.
