We had the good fortune of connecting with Tonique Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tonique, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business revolves around my desire for independence. I’ve always had a strong sense of self-reliance and the aspiration to work for myself. When I wake up every day and go to work for someone else, I find it disheartening that my efforts contribute to their financial success, while I only receive a small portion of the rewards. Instead, I believe that if I work hard and channel my passion into something I love, I can create a better future for myself.
Furthermore, I have a genuine desire to give back to the community. I am considering the establishment of a mentorship program aimed at young entrepreneurs who are still in middle and high school and have dreams of starting their own fashion lines. I find great joy in teaching others and have previously taken on the role of a trainer in my previous jobs. Through this mentorship program, I aim to inspire and guide our youth towards positive endeavors, showing them that quick money doesn’t have to involve illegal activities.”
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am currently working as an Assistant Community Manager, a position I achieved relatively quickly in my career due to my strong work ethic and dedication. Prior to this role, I worked as a 911 Communications Training Officer until 2021. However, I began to feel burnt out and lost my passion for the work. During that time, I also worked as a Leasing Consultant on a temporary basis, as I was exploring my next career move. When I decided to leave the 911 field in 2021, I transitioned to becoming a full-time Leasing Consultant.
I thoroughly enjoyed my role as a Leasing Consultant because it allowed me to engage directly with people and bring happiness to their lives by helping them find their ideal homes. I maintain regular contact with my residents and ensure I have an open-door policy, encouraging them to approach me with any concerns or needs. Having experienced the feeling of living somewhere and not being satisfied with the leasing office, I am driven to provide a better experience for my residents.
In July 2022, I relocated to the DFW area and continued my career as a Leasing Consultant. Within just a few months, I demonstrated my capabilities and dedication, leading to my promotion to Assistant Community Manager in October 2022. This achievement occurred even before completing my first year with the company. This career path has taught me the value of hard work, networking, and expanding my professional brand. It has pushed me to surpass my limits and strive for even greater accomplishments.”

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The group of people who deserve recognition includes my family, my partner, and my friends. Without them, Nonchalant by Neek wouldn’t have endured. They consistently support my business by purchasing merchandise, sharing posts on social media, spreading the word, and promoting my brand through actions like wearing my shirts or using my cups and posting pictures. I’m extremely grateful for their unwavering support because they never ask for discounts and purchase items at the regular price, just like everyone else. Lately, my partner has been my biggest source of strength. When I considered giving up, she reminded me that we need to persevere and view any setbacks as stepping stones to a major comeback.
Their constant encouragement and belief in my business have been instrumental in keeping me motivated and determined to succeed. I’m truly fortunate to have such a supportive network of loved ones.
