We had the good fortune of connecting with Tochi Uzokwe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tochi, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Originality and consistency.

Nowadays it is easy to jump on trends and do things that everyone else is doing but, personally, I think there is value in doing things that come naturally to you. When you try to force art it doesn’t come out as good in my opinion.

I think the need for consistency is obvious in today’s world of massive data being shared on the internet. It’s really easy for people to miss or skip your content but when you consistently put things in people’s faces or ears, eventually they will tune in. Whether directly from you or from someone else that has heard about you.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
BM Casso is an independent Afrobeat artists based in Texas. What sets me apart is definitely my versatility with sound as a songwriter. I am able to infuse multiple genre of music into one. I make Afropop, Afrobeat, Afrotrap and Afroreggae type of songs with different vocal elements as well.

What I am most proud of is the fact that I have only been the music game for about 5 years now but I have worked with a lot of talented artists and creatives in general and I have been able to do this while fully managing myself musically as well as involving in other professions.

I got here by just being true to myself and being persistent. I think honesty and self reflection goes a long way. If you are passionate about something and you are honest with yourself, you are able to recognize your shortcomings and work to improve them. This enables you to amplify your strengths and improve on your weaknesses. Also recognizing the things that you need to get to the next level is a huge factor because you then start seeking collaborations that will enable you to get to that level.

I have learned that no one really owes you anything and feeling entitled gets you no where. You need to be able to work even when you feel no support. During good days and bad days and you need to try as much as you can to be your own motivator because even though you have a good support system, life can happen to anyone at any time and those people may not always be there to cheer you on.

I want the world to know that BM Casso is a talented artist and songwriter that will bring in a wave on new sounds.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It depends on the city. If I am in Dallas, I usually go to eat at the Nigerian restaurants then it’s deep Ellum for drinks and to hang out.

In Austin, it would be 6th street or the Domain.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have many people to thank for different aspects of my life to be honest.

In general, i want to shout out my uncle Austin who gave me a massive opportunity to take charge of my life by essentially sending me to college.

I want to thank Tobi for helping me survive college financially by giving me an opportunity for income.

I want to thank my family and friends for sticking with me through life and helping me amplify my talents. I am extremely grateful for them for their support when it comes to my music.
