We had the good fortune of connecting with Tip Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tip, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
The habits that have helped me succeed in my career have been consistency and discipline. When things are not going to right, being disciplined and staying consistent far more out weighs motivation on a day-to-day basis. For a business to succeed you have to be able to look at the end goal and just be appreciative of the journey and the lessons that come with being a business owner.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been a lifelong artist, I’ve been drawing since as far as I can remember. I won my first drawing competition at six years old. Art is deeply rooted in my soul. I started tattooing when I was 14 years old, I built a tattoo machine out of what I could find in my home and started to tattoo on myself and my friends. By the time I was 19 years old I got a job at a tattoo shop and for the past 16 years has been my sole job.
I specialize in black and gray realism but with a combined 22 years of experience i’m capable of tattooing any style of tattoo.
I think what sets me apart from other tattoo artists is the consistency that I bring day in and day out. Big tattoo or a small tattoo it has to be done to the best of my abilities every single time.
In this journey I’ve learned many lessons but the one that stands out the most to me is gratitude because tattooing has allowed me to achieve many goals that other wise would have been impossible to reach. And for that I’m forever thankful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of my favorite places in the city would be the Bishop arts District, Deep Ellum for its variety of restaurants and night life, 7th street in Fort Worth as we’ll. But I’m definitely a home body and enjoy being at home with the family.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shout out to my wife and kids but especially my mother. She’s the one that is still this hustler mentality of getting it by any means. My work ethic definitely comes from my mother. Seeing her work multiple jobs just trying to make ends meet motivated me to become an entrepreneur.
