We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Blackwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tim, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It honestly was out of passion. We immediately discovered multiple benefits to using CBD, or hemp as a whole. It helped with recovery from the gym, an anti-anxiety medicine, and even helped us sleep better. We wanted to share it with as many people as possible, despite it’s taboo nature in Texas.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Our goal has always been staying holistic, but being held accountable for accuracy and consistency. This spans from something as simple as making sure each label goes on exactly the same way as the last, to holding our farmers to standards of having lab reports, and making sure our customers know exactly what they are getting. We use glass instead of plastics for just about all of our products so we can do our part with our carbon footprint. All of our packaging is 100% recyclable. It’s something small, but if we’re going to put something out there, we want to make sure it goes back to the Earth in a renewable fashion.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would take them to Arcadia coffee, for a coffee experience that is rare to find these days. Legitimate second home experience, and friendly atmosphere. The museums here such as the Kimbell is always got something neat going on as well, and even though it’s not completely local, restaurants like Mi Cocina or Sushi Axiom always leave you wanting to come back again for another plate! Finally a nice stroll down the Trinity River (maybe not the whole river lol) is always a peaceful place to go enjoy the water, nature, and have a good conversation.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s so many to count. ZAL wouldn’t be where it’s at without the wonderful people involved. From support from our families, to our wonderful wholesalers that have been so helpful and informative with helping us operate. Our design team Thirst and Company has been an absolute asset in helping us with our branding as well. But mostly, a large part of the credit goes to Jess Tarter, she is one of the co-founders to this business, and she spent tireless hours working on bits from marketing, promotions, events, to labeling pre-rolls, tinctures, and fulfilling orders. Her work ethic is second to none and this business would not be where it is now without her hard work.
