We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany Tobey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tiffany, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
A lot of people hear “Sommelier” and interpret that in to some wine snob with not much education. I have two Bachelors degrees and feel like I learned more while becoming a Sommelier than I did in all my years of college. Wine is not just grape juice…it is Geography, Science, History, Heritage, and Passion.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Where I am today is not where I anticipated when I was a confused college kid. I have always loved wine and being in the heart of Texas grape growing out in the Lubbock area allowed me to to get into both the viticultural side and the consumer side of wine. The Sommelier world has always been pretty male dominated and it took awhile before I realized I had to try to be the best to even get my foot in the door. 5 years later and I am certified, judging wine competitions around the United States, consulting for magazines, guest speaking on various shows and podcasts, and running the most pioneering high-tech wine bar in the DFW area. My goals just get bigger from here.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend in the Metroplex I would stay in a fancy hotel on the Dallas skyline, Have an amazing Tapas lunch a Barcelona, ride the train over to Fort Worth and show them the stockyards and all of the historical Western charm of the area. Of course we would pop into Thirty Eight and Vine for some fabulous bubbles, then head back over to Dallas. I love the Bishop Arts area and would love to show any friend the Dallas Aquarium!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Court of Master Sommeliers has been a huge driving force behind my wine career, I want to go all the way and aspire to some day become a Master Sommelier (of which there are only 28 in the world). My desire to learn more and become better in my field is something that will never cap out with the educational opportunities and materials that the SommJournal Magazine has provided me along the way!
