We had the good fortune of connecting with Thomas & Pamela McCoy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Thomas & Pamela, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting a business was that I was always a hustler on the side by selling and buying for others on several platforms. My husband and I asked ourselves about what legacy will we leave behind? A legacy that would inspire young people to start a business from the ground up without it costing a lot of money. I personally was spending a lot of money financing other people’s businesses and from there we began putting together a plan and talking to God about the plan to start our own business. We knew the t-shirt industry was booming. We asked ourselves many questions. How would we get noticed? Why would people choose us to make their t-shirts? So, we stepped out on faith, started doing the research, and asking other shirt designers pertinent questions. Just to start a business in the middle of a pandemic was not a smart money wise decision. So, we continued to pray and stepped out on faith and invested our own money into the company. We decided to do a soft opening using encouraging words to motivate people to start their day on a positive note in the communities. We went as far as, putting t-shirts in mailboxes and orders started coming in.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
So, the business is twofold. The first is focused mainly on upcoming businesses promoting/advertising their logos on t-shirts and taking client’s orders. We both are educators with more than fifty years of experience, and we decided to share with co-workers. The second part is focusing on children with autism. We are exposing young people to our business by letting them know they too can be successful business owners no matter what disabilities or challenges they are faced. We are working with a few children with Autism that we are training how to make t-shirts and/or create their own art. We’d love to hear, what sets you apart from others? That’s’ a great question. Turn-around time. Even though we are a small business, we get the products to our clients in a timely manner within 2 days. Our customers love the fact that we meet their deadlines and prices are great, also.

What you are most proud of or excited about? We are excited that God has giving us the vision to expose the work and creativity of young people with autism so the community can see their work and never count them out! Just to know that our company will leave a legacy behind that will empower young people with autism so they can be proud productive citizens. Our passion is working with all children. The future is our children and it truly takes a village. Just to see this one young man fold a t-shirt was enough for us to know that God is in the midst of it all. So we are extremely excited to showcase the t-shirts in the coming months.

How did you get to where you are today business wise? By being motivated to work for ourselves being surrounded with positive likeminded people who continually motivates us. We never thought about giving up or giving in. We kept God as our CEO as He watched over every move and decision. With God being in control, nothing could stray us in the wrong direction.
Was it easy? Of course not, it was not easy. First and foremost, you must have a vision/plan. The Word tells us that without a vision, people perish. So, we took that same inspiration to the business, without a vision the business will not be successful. Also, we only shared the vision with likeminded people who inspired and encouraged us along the way.

What are the lessons that you’ve have learned along the way? Basically, just to keep a positive outlook on life, never give up, and don’t be afraid to take risk. If you don’t take risks, you may not gain the level of success you want to achieve. Keep the faith and trust in the Lord.

What do you want the world to know about you? We want the world to know first and foremost we are God’s children. This is a small black owned business ran solely by husband and wife. We put all our faith in the Lord who order our steps. We give all our customers what they ask for. Every t-shirt is made with love using high-quality t-shirt brands. Here at Zippy Apparel Printing, LLC we are humble and forever grateful that our beloved customers chose us to make their t-shirts.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, we would like to give all praise to God for allowing us to get this far because without him we would not be where we are today. I would like to give a special thanks to all my family, friends, and co-workers for all their encouragement, support and love as we take this journey together.

A special shoutout to some individuals that we would like to thank personally for believing in us. Keyera Woodberry who is a dynamic instructor in the t-shirt industry. When we needed help or just had a question she answered the call. Also, Jessica Teal, she is a true businesswoman. She literally quit her 9-5 job and opened up HairByJessie Salon just sharing her testimony was very inspiring.

To all those individuals who have purchased t-shirts and entrusted us with your logos. We love you with all our hearts and pray for your continued support, because the sky is the limit.
