We had the good fortune of connecting with Thomas Hellberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Thomas, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

In the beginning I felt that in the fashion market, men’s specifically, there was an opportunity to invest in high-quality custom shoes and accessories to fit the individual in a personal manner. Personally, I had always struggled to find shoes that not only fit me well but also matched my individual style and wardrobe. With Palmer James I looked to provide a solution for people like me who wanted unique, high quality, well-fitting shoes and accessories as an investment in ourselves.

That along with decades of dedication to the home improvement industry I decided to pursue a new career that aligned with my passion and values. Palmer James Designs was the perfect opportunity to do so. For me personally as a new father, it was extremely important that I was practicing what I preached. Demonstrating to my son that he can achieve anything in life. I want to lead by example and show him that he can pursue his dreams and passions, regardless of societal expectations or limitations.

Palmer James Designs was really driven by a desire to create a brand in honor of my son, fill a market gap for investable and personal high-quality custom shoes and accessories, while pursuing a future that aligned with my personal values and aspirations.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

A little about Palmer James Designs, we specialize in creating custom shoes and accessories that are of exceptional quality and personal. We understand the frustration of not being able to find the perfect pair of shoes that not only fit well but also match your personal style. That’s why we offer customization options that allow you to design your own shoes, ensuring a unique and perfect fit.

Our commitment to quality means that we source only the finest materials for our products, ensuring durability and longevity. We prioritize craftsmanship and attention to detail in every step of the manufacturing process, resulting in products that not only look great but also stand the test of time.

We are very proud to have established our brand in the name of my son, Palmer, as a symbol of honoring individuality and pursuing one’s dreams against all odds. We believe that every person should have the opportunity to express themselves through their fashion choices, and our custom designs enable them to do just that.

We strive to make our products affordable without compromising on quality. We believe that investing in oneself requires access to well-crafted, customized items that reflect their personal style. We hope to make luxury and uniqueness accessible to a wider audience.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a Houston transplant, I can proudly say that Dallas is where I consider home. After many amazing years of enjoying this great city here are a handful of spots I would recommend and take those who visit.

1. The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza: This museum provides a comprehensive look at the life, assassination, and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. It offers a fascinating historical experience related specifically to Dallas.

2. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden: This beautiful garden spans 66 acres and features stunning floral displays, manicured gardens, and scenic views of White Rock Lake. It’s a fantastic spot to relax, take a walk, and appreciate nature.

3. Deep Ellum: This vibrant, historic neighborhood is known for its vibrant arts and music scene. It’s filled with art galleries, live music venues, eclectic shops, and plenty of fantastic restaurants and bars.

4. The Bishop Arts District: Situated in the heart of Oak Cliff, this trendy neighborhood offers a unique blend of independent boutiques, art galleries, and a variety of dining options. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon exploring and enjoying the local culture.

5. The Dallas Museum of Art: If my friend is interested in art, this museum is a must-visit. It features an impressive collection of works from various periods and cultures, ranging from classical to contemporary art.

6. Klyde Warren Park: Located directly above a freeway, this urban park offers a range of activities such as fitness classes, food trucks, live music performances, and beautiful green spaces. It’s a fantastic place to relax, have a picnic, or simply enjoy a pleasant day outdoors.

7. The Dallas Farmers Market: This is a great spot to explore if my friend is interested in local produce, artisan food, and unique crafts. It’s a bustling market with a wide variety of vendors offering fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, and more.

And these are just a few of the many wonderful attractions and local spots that Dallas has to offer. DFW really does have it all and will always give its visitors something new to experience.

I first would like to “shoutout” to my mother. She has been my biggest supporter and inspiration throughout my journey of starting Palmer James Designs. Her unwavering belief in me and her constant encouragement have been instrumental in my success.

The Ruibal Family, owners, and operators of Ruibal’s Plants of Texas. They have been providing Dallas with high-quality plants and gardening supplies for over 30 years all over DFW and Dallas’ Farmer’s Market. Their commitment to sustainable growing practices and their extensive knowledge of horticulture makes them an invaluable resource for the community. The entire family, specifically Matt, Mark & Stephanie Ruibal have been an amazing support system for me and the Palmer James family.

And to my many very close friends and supporters, they know who they are. I am extremely blessed to have so many great people and families in my life. Our dedication and support of one another in unparalleled.
