We had the good fortune of connecting with Thi Rex and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Thi, what’s your definition for success?
To me success is liking what you do and how you do it without outside validation on your own time & terms.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
This question has always been a little hard for me to answer because all I can really say is that I’m just an entrepreneur all around. I do a lot of things from owning my own e-commerce business to social media marketing, being an artist as a DJ to being a content creator working with brands/ companies.
I can definitely say that overall, I am my own boss and in the end I am in control of my own schedule, and I can solely focus on my own craft and I am fortunate enough to not need to work for someone else. It definitely is not easy but to me i can’t envision my future any other way.
Where it all started was back in 2009. I was going out a lot in college and someone in the nightlife industry came up to me and asked how could he get me to work with him because I was bringing out big groups of friends every event. so he asked me if I wanted to be a promoter for him or if I wanted to work at the bar or be a cocktail and I told him no I want to learn how to DJ. I wanna be the first female Asian, DJ in Dallas, Texas, and that kind of spiraled my DJ career from playing at the biggest venues in Dallas opening up for big headliners to even being able to DJ overseas in Asia. from there I ended up partnering up by networking within the industry and i started to work on social media marketing to improve on my own brand which lead to my content creation and throwing my own events within the dallas nightlife. I even owned a restaurant briefly in Las Colinas because i ended up networking with the right people who shared the same vision as me.
Being an entrepreneur is definitely not for the faint of heart just like I mentioned above that I briefly owned a restaurant which we ended up having to close six months after we opened but when all you have is to bet on yourself, you have to just keep moving forward. That was how I kind of stumbled Upon e-commerce . I have multiple brands that I sell online and honestly e-commerce kind of ties into what I have learned lead up to this point, as far as marketing and branding.
What I can hope anyone takes away from my story, and if they’re on the fence of wanting to be their own boss and being Entrepreneur, just know that it is really hard you will fall a lot of times, and you will fail but just keep going. it is so worth it when you start to see the fruits of your labor‘s.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in North Dallas and I am a huge foodie. I would definitely plan a trip to Legacy West. There are a lot of amazing restaurants and shopping there. For some thing chill at night, I would head over to the Carrollton area. We’d have to make a stop to Ddong Ggo (what the locals call Chicken Butt) for some soju bombs & Korean street foods. There’s no shortage of amazing restaurants in Carrollton as well. From Korean barbecue to Viet Cajun crawfish and one of the best Thai restaurants (Too Thai) in my opinion. And if you have a sweet tooth, there are great dessert options too.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to start out by shouting out to my industry community. It started from there that I met some of my closest long time friends and biggest supporters. Where I was able to network and meet people that have introduced me to some of the biggest deals or partnerships in my life.
