Meet Thea Heussner | Owner & Cake Artist, Bakermama Cakes

We had the good fortune of connecting with Thea Heussner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Thea, why did you pursue a creative career?
For a long time, I worked a typical office job—structured, repetitive, and honestly, not very fulfilling. I found myself craving something more creative, something that allowed me to express myself and actually enjoy the process. So baking started as a simple escape, a way to unwind after work. But the more I baked, the more joy and release I found in it. I’d lose track of time trying new recipes or figuring out how to make things look as beautiful as they tasted. It lit up a part of me that had been asleep in the office world.
Eventually, I realized that what began as a hobby was actually a calling. Cake design gave me a way to blend art, beauty, and celebration into something meaningful. Every cake is personal, both to me and to the people I make it for. Owning my cake studio has allowed me to fully step into that creative space—and now, I get to make edible art that brings people joy. It’s the most fulfilling work I’ve ever done.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Through all of it, I’ve learned that intention matters more than perfection, creativity requires courage, and authenticity resonates. Every relationship – with clients, their families, vendors, and other cake designers, matters. That personal connection, plus beautiful craftsmanship, is why clients rave about my cakes tasting “as extraordinary as it looks” and why they trust me with one of the sweetest centerpieces of their day.
What I want the world to know about me – and about Bakermama – is that this is where artistry meets heart. I show up for your cake as I do for a dear friend, pouring creativity, care, and sweetness into every detail. Whether it’s a wedding, a birthday, or a simple sugar craving, I’m honored to be part of your story.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came to visit, we’d spend the week soaking up the charm and character of Downtown McKinney, Texas. It’s a gem of a place where locally owned small businesses thrive and community still feels like community.
What I love most about McKinney is the heartbeat of the small business. You can feel the care and creativity in everything – from the handcrafted goods to the delicious menus to the shop windows. It’s inspiring and deeply personal, and I love being part of that local ecosystem!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many people have shaped my journey, and I wouldn’t be where I am without them!
My love for sugar art began thanks to my neighbor, Pam. She’d often catch me walking home from school and offer me a ride—and if I was lucky, she’d take me with her to the grocery store first. I’d press my nose against the bakery display case, mesmerized by the decorated treats, and she never sent me home without a cookie. That early exposure to sweetness, both literal and figurative, planted a seed.
Later on at the office, my coworkers became my unofficial taste testers. I’d bring in my baking experiments, and their appreciation and encouragement meant more than they probably realized. One day, my boss surprised me with a KitchenAid mixer as a thank-you for the treats I shared—it was such a generous gesture, and honestly, it felt like a nudge from God to keep going.
My best friend Niki deserves a huge shoutout too. She encouraged me to take my first cake decorating class—and even came with me. That class changed everything. It opened the door to a whole new world of creative expression I hadn’t realized I needed.
And finally, my husband Mark. He believed in me before I fully believed in myself. From giving me the space and time to pursue this path, to supporting the early investments needed to get my business off the ground, he’s been my constant behind-the-scenes cheerleader.
Each of these people gave me a little push or a little confidence exactly when I needed it—and I carry their support with me in every cake I make.
