We had the good fortune of connecting with Teah Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Teah, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always liked being in the kitchen whether it was watching my grandmother bake cakes; waiting to lick the bowl when she was done. As well as helping my granny bake cookies for the holiday seasons. Being in the kitchen felt like a safe space where I could create without being bothered with the problems of the outside world. I started using it as a coping mechanism when I would feel anxious or depressed. Eventually I started letting people sample my desserts; people wanted to pay me for more. At the time I wasn’t sure if I wanted to truly pursue baking as a career until I realized it something I love. I never wanted to work and hate my job every day. Becoming an entrepreneur felt like the right decision.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Food is such beautiful piece of art. I’m proud of myself for not getting discouraged when sales are low and I have too much product left over. I know that I’m headed into the right direction because I’m gaining new clientele each day. I wish I could say this was easy but it’s not. Being an entrepreneur and working in the food industry is one of the hardest things to do in my opinion. You have to make sure everything is labeled for those with allergies and do research on each product that you use in your recipe. Can’t forget the most important part is getting yourself out there for people to know you exist. I am not a huge talker. I don’t like public speaking or engaging with people I’m unfamiliar with. Nine times out of ten I’m freaking out having to talk to people. I’m still learning to talk to people and get out of my comfort zone to promote my business. I’ve learned that you can’t run a business sitting down. You have to work 10x as hard to get where you want to be. You have to be the one to work hard and no one can do it for you. I also learned that everyone isn’t your customer and trying to please everyone isn’t possible. I want the world to know that every treat that I make is baked with love. You can simply make someone’s day by giving them a sweet treat to start or end their day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m naturally a home body but if my bestfriend is in my city its only right we have a good time. Friday: The evening/night begins as soon as the clock strikes 5 pm. Depending on the season we are in we could always go to Texas Live or even a cute bar like bar louie to get a drink to decompress from the week we’ve had. It would be something slight and easy for the first night.
Saturday: Once Saturday hits we will definitely have brunch at either Stirr or Meddlesome Moth. Their brunch options are pretty good. To have a good time since we will be already in Dallas either it’s in Deep Ellum or the design district. We could go to bowlounge to bowl and have a good time. Or we could go to Another Round and play mini golf. Depending on the night and how it goes we could easily call it a night. Or to do something chill we could go to Cinepolis and watch a movie to end the night.
Sunday: We would definitely go to church before doing anything else. Having a nice late lunch or early dinner at Vidorra or the finch in Grand Prairie. There are a lot of hidden gems in Dallas that are as good as the heavy hitters.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I couldn’t just shoutout one person when it comes to this business. I have a huge support system that pushes me out of my comfort zone whether it’s in kitchen, content creating, or even the business aspect of it all. My church family at Word of Truth Family Church constantly give me critiques on how to improve certain treats, and how to be better at putting content out. I wouldn’t be able to actually pursue this business full time if it wasn’t for my family who are the taste testers of every new treat that I create. No one gives you the truth like your own family, and its been extremely helpful when I want to continually evolve in the baking world.
