We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Coborn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always known that the office life was not for me. I wasn’t always sure what I would do or where I would end up, but I knew it wouldn’t be inside office walls and sitting behind a desk. Having that realization, helped me weed out any potential opportunities that would lead to something like that. Over time, different doors started to open for me; one would present itself, I’d walk through to a new path and that would lead me in front of another one and so on.
It was actually the shutdown that really pushed me through that last door to entrepreneurship. Before that happened, I was juggling three jobs and had been doing so for almost a year. Prior to that, I always had at least two jobs or was a full time student while working a full time job. So, all three of my jobs shut down and I was literally forced to stop working for the first time since I was 14. COVID brought so much negativity into our world, but, personally, the shutdown was exactly what I needed. I realized I had been living in this zombie auto-pilot mode. Wake up, get ready, go to the studio, go to the restaurant, go home, sleep, wake up, get ready, go to the spa, go home, sleep, repeat.
For so long, I thought I needed to be doing all of these things to make life work, but I wasn’t even living. I wasn’t reaching my full potential at anything because I was putting all my eggs into a million different baskets. One here, one there, two over there… nothing was growing. For once I had time to think and reevaluate what I actually wanted my life to look like. The two most important realizations that came to me were, f*$k working for someone else and that I need to be creating to feel fulfilled in my life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Art has always been a huge part of my life! Growing up, I would spend my days painting, drawing, and creating, but to be honest, I was not the next Georgia O’Keeffe. As much as I loved, and still love it, I knew I wouldn’t make a future from creating traditional art. As a child and teenager, I planned to enter into the fashion world, either as a designer or buyer. My interests for my future changed as I got older, and one door after another led me into the beauty world, then to becoming a permanent makeup artist.
Naturally, I am also a pretty analytical person. I like order and patterns, structure and shapes, and things that can be defined. Permanent makeup allowed me an outlet to combine my artistic talents with analytics. The shapes have rules to their structure and the technique has order and patterns. After training and taking the time to learn this craft, it clicks in my brain like something natural.
I specialize in brow shading and lip tattooing (we call it Lip Blush!) and both shapes can create such beautiful enhancements to a person’s face, if done correctly. The power that I have with my tattoo machine is life changing for some and to be able to provide that is something I do not hold lightly. I care so much about the work that I do for the amazing people I have the pleasure of having in my chair and I want each of them to know that I promise to provide a positive experience that leaves them grateful for choosing me as their artist.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My studio is in west Frisco on the second floor of a cute little shopping center with some great businesses. Next to us is an amazing, family-owned photography studio, BLK STY. They have set ups that can bring a comfortable, lived-in vibe to your photoshoot or more professional backdrops with some of the best natural lighting. Across from them is a five star physical therapy center, FIT Physical Therapy. On the first floor is one of Frisco’s best brunch spots, Barney’s Brunch House! I highly recommend the avo toast or garden panini and a glass of their fresh squeezed OJ. Next to them, you’ll find all your CBD needs at American Shaman. They have some of the best quality CBD in the area and save us from stress with their CBD teas. Need to relieve some tension from your life? Tapout Fitness is a lively boxing gym directly below our studio. Not only do they have boxing, but they also offer self defense and kids classes! After you’ve gotten your sweat on, head next door to get your sweet on! Annies Sweets & Treats has the best boba and macaroons for your afternoon cravings. For dinner, you have to check out Bistro Trio and get the stuffed mushrooms. After a long day, the patio is perfect for relaxing and winding down. If you’re looking for a little more action, head north on FM 423 about 10 minutes, then a right at Main Street and you’ll be on your way to Toyota Stadium where you can catch an FC Dallas Soccer game. Around there you’ll find tons of amazing restaurants and shops. You’ll also need to check out the Frisco Farmers Market right next to the stadium! There, you’ll find some of Frisco’s best produce and vendors from honey and veggies to traditional greek food and decadent pupusas.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would shout out Holly Starcevich from the top of every building in the world if I could! That woman came into my life and flipped it upside down in the most amazing, beautiful way. She has been my mentor on this journey in the permanent makeup world and, without her, I honestly don’t know if I would still be in it. From day one, she has been a supportive, uplifting and encouraging force for me. When I want to cry and quit, when I feel lost or my brain decides to take a day off, without hesitation, she is there. Her energy, her drive, and dedication are intoxicating and she leaves everyone that she meets, feeling better about themselves. If I can become even half of the person and artist she is, I’ll be one lucky lady.
In addition to Holly, I have to recognize the other incredible women I get to spend my days with. Terry, Whitney and Maddi make up the rest of our Hoshi Fam and together, the five of us have created this unstoppable girl boss force of nature. Terry comes in with the realness, Whit comes in with the sweetness and Maddi keeps it all together. It wouldn’t work any other way and I feel so blessed everyday to have them in my life.
It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t give a huge credit to the ladies that keep me from an absolute mental breakdown. Shabby Talebi and Kali Ah Yuen are the fabulous women that run People’s Revolt, a public relations company. What I do, is a very visual type of service which means that social media is a huge marketing tool for me. Naturally, I am a pretty private person, so constant, consistent social media is not the most comfortable thing for me to do. Before hiring them, the pressure of how important social media was to my work weighed so heavy on me, to the point that it was starting to affect how I felt doing my actual job. They came into my world and brought so much creative peace. These ladies take my visions and execute them flawlessly all while saving my mental health!
I can’t finish this without shouting out my mama, my brother, and my boyfriend. Even on my worst days, my mom is my biggest cheerleader and someone I can always count on to cheer me up and encourage me to keep going. My brother, for all of his help with my fur babies and keeping my house from burning down on my long days at work. Lastly, my incredible boyfriend. His natural drive and determination motivate me everyday to be a better version of myself. Like a spark that ignited a flame, he brings so much happiness, peace and positivity to my life.
Thank you thank you thank you, Holly, Terry, Whit, Maddi, Shabs, Kali, Mama, Coleman and Fer. Each of you hold so much of my heart and I wouldn’t be me without y’all.
