We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanner Fedell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tanner, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Early in my career, my work life balance was heavily focused on work as I was single with no kids. Now that I am married and have a 2 year old, I am very focused on being a present Husband and Father. I still make sure I complete all responsibilities I have for my business but once those are done for the day they’re done for good and I focus on my family. Where I used to work, stop, and then work again well into the evening.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a Personal Financial Planner. I primarily help younger families build wealth that is meant to last through many generations to come. We talk about planning for their own financial independence, saving for their kids college, paying back student loans, buying houses/cars, the whole gamut. If it affects you financially, I will consult with you about it. I’m most proud that the average Financial Planner works with those who have already built wealth and I’m unique in that I’m helping younger people get to that point. I was 22 when I started my business. I was able to get to where I am today through a lot of support from family and great mentors. Outside of that, a lot of it was a mental game and keeping the long term plan in mind. It was very difficult because while you’re going through the short term struggles, it’s hard to envision the long term success. In my first year of business, I was below the poverty line. I split apartments with 3 other people and lived a very lean lifestyle. I could barely afford to make the 4-hour drive home to see my parents because I often didn’t have enough money to put gas in my truck. I had to sell my truck and get a car. I couldn’t go out with my friends. I dropped my gym membership. The list goes on and there were many sacrifices that were made and it was hard because a lot of my friends out of college were making good money and able to do things that I couldn’t. But if you have a long term perspective, you can get through the short term struggles. Now that I’ve had some success I’m able to work as much as I want to, set my own schedule, take as many vacations as I’d like and spend as much time as possible with my family. I don’t have to answer to a boss, just my clients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man, tough question for me as I don’t get out as much as I used to! But first and foremost we’d get up early and do a workout. That’s how I start every weekday. Then we’d go get some coffee. My favorite coffee in the world is pretty far away from where I live but worth the drive, It’s called Summermoon Coffee. You’ll never want to drink another brand of coffee. After that, we’d have to eat a ton of food probably some brunch spot in Dallas or where I live in Waxahachie Butter and Grace is a phenomenal brunch spot. After that, we’d visit one of my favorite places, my in-laws Farm. It’s peaceful, the animals are fun to watch and it’s a nice change of pace from the big city of Dallas. If we had time to get away I’d visit one of the great lakes around the area. Either Whiterock Lake or if we wanted to get away head out to Possum Kingdom. I love being outdoors. Anything to do with the outdoors is where I want to be.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Dad was a Business Owner too and I owe a lot of my success to him. All my life I observed how hard he worked to take care of myself and 4 other siblings. Also, I owe a lot of success to my wife. When we got married I had my best year in business. She provided a level of support that was much deeper than what I’ve ever experienced. And there was a lot of motivation from getting married because I was no longer just doing this for myself, but doing it for us and our future family. If I had to choose a book it would be Discipline Equals Freedom by Jocko Willink.
