We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanisha Marshall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tanisha, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My artistic career found me when I needed it most. As a child, I loved all things creative I experimented with drawing, singing, playing the piano, and even tried collage and embroidery. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize it was possible to follow a creative path, so I didn’t pursue it further.

In my late thirties, I rediscovered art after going through a difficult situation. I began creating earrings, and something ignited within me. My passion for creativity was reignited, evolving from beaded designs to polymer clay earrings and now to abstract art.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art stems from a need to be free. There was a period in my life when I didn’t love myself, and I cared more about what others thought of me than what I thought of myself. It took me a while to realize that I couldn’t please everyone and that I was better off being myself. I love abstract art because it allows me to be free when I create I can freely place my marks and paint on the canvas, giving me the freedom I once lacked.

These days, I embrace who I am. The journey to pursuing art hasn’t been easy; there have been many obstacles, but with obstacles come lessons. I’ve learned that if something doesn’t work, don’t give up try a different way. That mindset alone has helped me overcome many challenges.

I’m on a mission to encourage anyone who will listen that we are all unique, and the world needs us. We each bring something special no one is exactly like you, and you will reach people I can’t reach. We need each other.

My hope is that my art brings joy, peace, and love into someone’s home. But more than that, I hope to empower others to love themselves completely and open their hearts to following their true calling, whatever that may be.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would first check out some live music not too far from my house. After enjoying the music, I’d take my friend to one of my favorite vegan restaurants. After spending some time in my town, we’d take a road trip to Waco, Texas, to visit Magnolia as our first stop. Then, we’d head to our final destination in Austin, Texas, to explore the art scene and enjoy the nightlife, which is usually full of live music and good vegan food, I love Rebel Cheese Restaurant.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m grateful for my husband, who has been both encouraging and supportive as I pursue my creative journey. I’m also thankful for my friend Jackie, who took me to the art store and helped me rediscover my love of art.
