We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanesha Herndon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tanesha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Mixed Moka was birth out of a dark place in my life. I was a single mother of two kids and i felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders. I needed motivation to keep pushing so I started out just sending motivational quotes to my co workers because I just knew I wasn’t the only one feeling like this. After doing that for a while I started making Tshirts with motivational sayings and that’s how Mixed Moka motivational sayings went from being on paper to being on Tshirts . I was doing T-shirts off and on for a couple years when I decided to expand my business and that’s when I opened a boutique and my inspiration behind that was the fact that I have always been a plus size girl and all the clothes I could find was old fashioned or just didn’t fit right. I made it a goal of mine to change the way fashion was presented to the plus size world, and even though I wanted to make sure the clothes were sexy in classy for the plus size community Mixed Moka caters to every woman no matter the size or style preference. I’m so passionate about fashion that I’ve added personal styling to the mixed Moka brand and I’m building confidence one outfit at a time.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Mixed Moka is not just a business it’s my brand/ movement. When you shop with Mixed Moka it’s an experience you can’t get anywhere else. I listen to my Moka dolls , I make sure they get the best quality product and I’m a stylist so I give them tips on how to make the outfit work for their body type. I always tell them you make the outfit the outfit doesn’t make you so wear it with confidence because if you don’t it will show and mess up the whole look. I’m most proud of the smile that comes across my clients face when they rock my brand nothing tops that to me. When it comes to business what I’ve learned is that you have to give it your all everyday because no one is going to go harder then you for your business. I’ve made it this far by never giving up and by telling myself to keep pushing even on the days when I want to give up. Starting a business is pretty easy staying in business can be challenging because what most people don’t tell you is most business owners take a lot of losses before they start making a profit. If you have a passion for your business those losses will fuel the fire to keep you pushing and you will appreciate the profits that much more. I want the world to know that the success of your business is based off the amount of work that you’re willing to put in and I’m going to always bet on Mixed Moka because it’s not just a brand it’s a whole movement. BE BOLD BE BEAUTIFUL BE YOUNIQUE BE YOU AND GET MIXED BY MIXED MOKA.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dallas is so full of exciting things to do. If my best friend came to visit me and she not from Dallas. I would take her to some of my favorite spots. We would start off by visiting Boss lady nutrition in Mesquite Texas to get one of my favorite banana pudding shake and a jolly rancher tea. Then we would go to north park mall to shop by me being a personal stylist I have to stay up to date on the latest fashion. After a long day of shopping I would take her to Benihana for dinner and I would definitely have her try the plum wine which is my favorite drink at bennys. The night is still young at this point so we would end the night at one of Dallas hot spots ESO Mimosa Bar.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my support system which consists of my family and friends and all my Moka dolls, because without their love and support I would have given up on Mixed Moka a long time ago.
