We had the good fortune of connecting with Tameya Tarkington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tameya, how do you think about risk?
When I think about “risk taking” I instantly think of moving from being comfortable to uncomfortable to achieve the next level. What I mean by this is, usually the urge to take a “risk” comes when you’ve been in a constant state of being comfortable-whether that is in your personal life or professional career- the feeling of wanting to get to the next level or accomplish a goal requires some level of risk to get there. Not all “risks” yield the a successful result but that doesn’t make the risk any less necessary. It is just a lesson for the next go round of risk taking moments. Taking risks has lead to many successes and opportunities in my career. I relocated across regions, with my young daughter, searching for that next level. I knew if I had stayed comfortable in my hometown, I would never see the other side of success that I’ve prayed for. Taking that leap or risk, really opened up opportunities to grow in my career, network and foster relationships that have pushed may career further and helped me understand how much of an impact I want to make with other.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has been a fulfilling one that is still being written. I started in Corporate America at the young age of 21 working for a major retailer with no experience but what set me apart from others, and still does to this day, is my ability to speak up for myself and others. Being the only black woman in many meetings and corporate settings coupled with having no experience yet a bold voice was a challenge for me and often times hindered my advancement. I was often told my “tone” or “direct” approach deemed me as “unapproachable’, “difficult” and the word I dislike the most “aggressive”. This was a huge challenge for me as I often felt I should silence myself more or change the tone of my voice to seem more “relatable”. I realized that other Black women would show up that way and truly not be their authentic selves to combat being labeled. This lit a fire in me to continue to show up as me- unapologetic, authentic and kind- as I understood others perception of me what just a reflection of their own fear of me showing up! It took me a few years, lots of prayer, great mentors who looked like me to really reach the point I am at now, which is continuing to pinpoint others projections vs. reality on how I show up. I pride myself in challenging the status quo in Corporate America and Fashion while also creating opportunities & advocating for Black women to feel comfortable being their true selves in those spaces. The world will know that this is my purpose and mission.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ohhh yeaaaa! I LOVE putting together unofficial “what to do in the DFW” lists for my friends and family! Okay here it goes, on Monday- visit the African American Museum. Admission is free on Mondays and the beautiful storytelling within the museum is one to check out Tuesday- Taco at Federalas- Dallas! Being from the Milwaukee, WI, we would take the drive to Chicago often and this was one of thee best Taco spots in Chicago so I know first hand the food is great!
Wednesday- Check out the Dallas Black dance theatre then have dinner at The House of Blues Restaurant & Bar- I love Live music
Thursday- Happy hour at Happiest hour and then check out Ladies Night and more Live music at Sandaga
Friday- Go karting at Andretti indoor karting and games then Check out a comedy show at the Arlington Improv.
Saturday- Do some shopping at Northpark Mall, brunch at RH rooftop and dinner at STK
Sunday- Bring on the sports- my favorite new place to be and watch the games is a new spot called Brew City Kitchen & Kocktails! Great atmosphere and best catfish basket in town!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate all of who I am and will become to God!
Aside for him, there are a few earthly angels that have helped shape me and continue to pour into me when I have nothing left; My mother, Kasandra Tarkington- If there was a picture next to the word “confidence” it would be her picture! I can never think of a moment where my mom lacked confidence or showed up in a space as if she didn’t own it. Right, wrong or indifferent, her confidence never wavered.
My Daughter, Zora Bowie- I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect child. She is my best friend and a voice of reason at times- even though I am the parent! Hah! She is becoming the better version on me and her extra push when I am doubting myself makes everything better.
My forever mentor, Kimberly Paige Engle- Author, Business Owner, Marketing guru etc- Kimberly has been a constant support system since my earlier start in Corporate America over 12 years ago. She has a wealth of knowledge and quickly took me under her wing on how to navigate this space as a Black woman.
My Family & Friends, My Husband (Jay), sisters (Teju & Taylor), nieces & nephew (Madison, Bailey, Kennady and Milo), Uncles & Aunts( Val, Kevin, Sammy, Chris and Auntie V) James Buchanan Jr.
Lastly my heavenly angel Ebony Tarkington. I hope I am making you proud! Miss you much.
