We had the good fortune of connecting with Taliah Baker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taliah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Since I was a kid I always had a passion for hair, but never took it serious even though EVERYONE said I should. Working a dead end job I would do hair on the weekends or my off days but then one day it just clicked! The beauty industry is so successful because someone is always going to need their hair done, ALWAYS! March of 2019 I quit my day job and started doing Hair full time. I focused my business on being cute on a budget. I love cute stuff, but im cheap as well lol hints how I came up with the name “Adorable and Affordable Slays” cause why we cant get cute on a budget! 4 years later here I am still making woman feel beautiful and sometimes even being a life saver or changer. In January 2024 I rebranded into “The Lair” aka Captain Save A Slay
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Here at “The Lair” i specialize in braids, weaves, wigs, and coloring extensions. What sets me apart from other hair stylist is my creativity, work ethic, and personality. I tell all my clients “you’ll love me its always a party in my chair” and for sure they do. For the ones that know me even outside of doing hair they know i am a comedian so if your shy I promise it wont last for long once I get you laughing you’ll loosen up and sometimes even open up. What people fail to realize is as a service provider you have to make your clients feel loved and comfortable enough to want to come back. It’s not always about how good the style was but how did you make them feel while they were in the chair. In the beginning I was also shy and so focused on doing a good job that I would stay quiet most of the time and let the tv entertain them, but as i started to hone my skills and build more clientele the confidence boost was real! I was more outgoing, worked faster, and sometimes our appointments would turn into therapy sessions lol. Once you start building bonds with your clients they become family and its starts feeling less and less like a job to you. The reason I rebranded in 2024 is because with the change in demand and the inflation on the economy I was more than just a cheaper route to take, I was a heroine, “The Slay Captain”. Although I have increased my prices overtime, it is still affordable and the skills are top tier. If your ever on a budget and need saving, call Captain Save a Slay to save the day.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
On a night out, one of my favorite places to go is Head Quarters. Friday nights ladies get in free and the drinks are on sale. It’s a ladies night so they play classic R&B jams all night and it’s totally a vibe. I get a few of those $3 lemon drops and babaayy! Lol give me a mic! I also like to hit up Deep Ellum sometimes just as a pre-gamer. Take a stroll down the strip and meet new people, but if you want to actually visit a club out there I recommend “The Ninez”. Theres plenty of great hooka lounges around as well if you like after hour spots. Im also into arcades, bowling, and adventurous games so Pinstacks is a great place to go and have some
Fun with your friends. There is an open bar and so many different attractions.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I like to dedicate a shout out to all social media platforms and all my former classmates. You guy supported me from then until now and made me the success I am today and I appreciate you so much! Everyday I get up and post my work, flyers, and price list all over facebook and instagram and the shares I get and word of mouth promotion helps me book and keep my clientele. I also like to shout out my daughter, Trezure Wines who gives me a reason to keep going even when business gets slow. And to my parents, thank you for blessing me with my talent and Creativity.
