We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydne McDade, CPA and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sydne, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe big rewards come from taking big risks. My career wouldn’t be as rewarding as it is if I didn’t take risk. It started with changing my major. I was originally a business management major in college when my Accounting 1 professor suggested I change my major while handing in my final. I was hesitant until I got my first “big girl” paycheck and noticed how much taxes were taken out. I was furious and ultimately curios how to avoid taxes for the rest of my life. I added accounting as a major that same semester which was risky because I was well into my Management classes and now had to take more hours while balancing my other extracurricular activities.

Adding accounting as a major led to me constantly hearing about the CPA exam which I decided to start studying for right after graduation. To me, that was the biggest risk, studying and working full time with no certain end in sight. Studying took a lot of time away from my family but it led to me passing the exams of the first try and starting a business that I feel is getting more successful every day. That is a reward I couldn’t see as a sophomore in college.

What should our readers know about your business?
SydTheCPA is a business consulting firm that tailors tax advice to the owners specific needs. I started off just preparing taxes as a side gig when I was working in public accounting. Luckily enough, everyone needs their taxes done so my business took off very rapidly. I was able to quit my job and work in my business full time. My first challenge was again, every one needs their taxes done. So I was growing to fast without any organization or systems in place. I overcame that by niching my business to be primarily for real estate investors, and prioritizing implementing systems and organization.

This has lead to my business delivering exceptional service to my clients and also winning DFW Choice Gold, two years in a row.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well, I don’t claim to be self made. I want to shoutout my family for supporting me, my professor for suggesting I change my major and to my clients for trusting me. I also can’t not shoutout “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks.
