We had the good fortune of connecting with Suzy Mighell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Suzy, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor is my authenticity! Everything about Empty Nest Blessed is ME – from the colors on my website to the emojis I use in my Instagram captions! I’m just myself, and since I’m an empty nester, I’m speaking to a group of my peers. Women are complex and multi-faceted creatures, and our interests are as diverse as we are! The topics I cover on Empty Nest Blessed reflect that, and they’re topics that are interesting to me and to most women over 50. We talk about everything from tips for aging lips (!) to “parenting” adult kids. (And everything in between.) I share my challenges, joys, and struggles with my followers, and always strive to be true to my calling to encourage, inspire, and bless them.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Back in the 80s, I was a PR major in college. There were no computers. There was no internet, There was no such thing as a blog! I’m completely self-taught. I think – I hope – that inspires other empty nesters. If I can do it, you can too! I’m no different than any of my peers – I just put myself out there to let them come along on my journey. There have been so many kind people along the way! Everyone is so encouraging and no one has ever made me feel old and stupid. (I’m so grateful for that!) In fact, quite the contrary. In my industry, which is full of 20-and 30-somethings, many of them say they’ve told their moms to follow me on Instagram. That’s such an encouragement!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to the Arboretum and for a nice long walk around White Rock Lake. We would dine al fresco at some of my favorite spots like Snooze and Bella Greens at Walnut Hill & Central. For the best burger, they would need to go to Haystack at Mockingbird and Abrams, and I would absolutely take them to Cantina Laredo for some fajitas. Then we would take in a Rangers game. If it was football season, we’d have to trek down to Waco to gorgeous McLane Stadium to see my Baylor Bears play football!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Just like anyone who is successful in any way, there is a team behind the scenes. Mine includes my two 20-something assistants Natalie & Casey, who are fearless about anything tech, inspire and push me to do things that are sometimes outside my comfort zone, and occasionally let me give them advice! There’s also my tech team at WP Barista, that keeps my website safe, glitch-free, and running smoothly. I’m so grateful for my supportive family, my encouraging kids, and my amazing husband. He is my photographer, CPA, and biggest cheerleader. Finally and most importantly, there is my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who went before me, prepared me for such a time as this, and placed the mission of Empty Nest Blessed (To encourage, inspire, and bless empty nesters.) in my heart. He continues to guide me, prompt me with content ideas, and bless me with the sweetest followers.
