We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Gowers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
To be honest? It kinda just happened. You know when you were a kid in school and your teacher would have you draw or color what you wanted to be when you grew up? Well my paper went blank all the way through high school. I never knew or could come up with, or knew what I wanted to be… but I was always super creative and super athletic. I played all sorts of sports growing up. Hockey, football and baseball in high school. But between getting injured or Not making the varsity team that was out the window. I had been in band though and was always pretty good at learning new things quickly. It was 2010, Before I knew it high school was over and I had JUST learned how to dj on turn tables. After a year or two of playing around Dallas I started venturing out of state, and coming home one time I passed the art institute. Since my family had been wanting me to go to college I looked into classes there and that’s where I found live sound and audio production. In 2011. Which at that time I had JUST begun to start making music of my own. So when I went to meet with the admissions director i brought in a cd with my first 2 songs ever. He was impressed and that’s actually why I had gotten accepted to begin with. It wasn’t until 2016 that I had gotten my first release with a real label. Which was dirt lies and audio black out of the UK.. since then I’ve been working recording with bands and producing local hip hop rappers. One of them became a close friend over the years and he ended up on the label “big ticket” and working with bone thugs and harmony. And lil flip.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of my proudest moments was actually getting to dj on mtv. For the real world Las Vegas’s finale watch party. If I hadn’t gone on this little mini tour my friend forest and a couple others out together we wouldn’t have gotten to play a dj set at “something wicked” which ultimately put my name out there just enough to have been asked to do the event in the first place.
One thing that I think sets me apart is that I don’t like to put limitations on myself. I don’t just make one particular genre of music. I enjoy making ALL MUSIC period. There’s just something about being able to change a persons mood or outlook on life even if it’s just for 3-4 minutes. In those few minutes you could take someone back to a distant memory that they cherish, or a nostalgic feeling. I guess, if your really good you can tap into an extremely intimate exchange with a person and you may never have met them in the first place. At least that’s how I feel about some my favorite songs
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well first of all any and everyone coming to Dallas Fort Worth NEEDS to go to the Fort Worth stockyards. Imagine it’s high noon on a weekday and you find yourself in the middle of a old brick street you turn around and see a herd of about 5-6 longhorns coming right at you with 4 guys on horses right behind them As if you’ve just time traveled back to the1800’s and a couple ranchers just made it into town on a cattle drive. They do that everyday at noon as a tourist attraction. As well as a real rodeo every Friday and Saturday night. (Which fun fact I actually was a bullfighter for the rodeo ( yes the guy that saves the bull rider) around the cowtown coliseum are shops, restaurants, and bars.
Notable places in the stockyards would be riskys bbq.
Oh and billybobs!which also has live bull riding Friday and Saturday nights.
Next would HAVE TO BE either a Dallas stars hockey game, Texas rangers baseball game . And whether your a fan or not a Dallas cowboys game. ( just to see the stadium)
And if you happen to be here around Christmas, you must go to Main Street in grapevine, where they turn the entire street and business into a Christmas wonderland at the North Pole. It’s actually pretty fun for a family night.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Well first of all my mom. She’s always been there to support any and everything I’ve wanted to do in life and music was one of the many life decisions of mine that she’s supported 100%.
2nd would have to be someone I went to school with . the reason I really got into music to begin with and who right me how to dj. Forrest sinnes. The person who I traveled everywhere to dj with. From 2010- 2015 we were inseparable. We ended up moving to Oklahoma City together and really helped jump start the edm scene there around okc.
And 3rd would be the 2 people who gave me my first chance to dj in Dallas at lizard lounge dj raydar and dj shaolin. Resident djs at lizard lounge.
Other notables would be Mary Snow White(#1 female dj for sure) gilbert (dj titan), and Bennie Cardona( dj benasti).
If it wasn’t for the local Dallas djs before me. I would have never gotten a chance to make a name for myself
