We had the good fortune of connecting with Stacey Schumacher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stacey, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Our mission! The most important factor behind my success and the success of Texas Coalition for Animal Protection, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, is the difference we make in the communities we serve. If we can reach one pet who otherwise would not have access to essential, routine veterinary care; save one animal from euthanasia; or help a struggling mom’s budget go further, so her child can grow up knowing the love of pets, that’s a win in my book.
I founded TCAP to prevent senseless euthanasia in city animal shelters, but it has evolved into more than that. We partner with shelters, rescues, and pet parents to make their budgets go further and remove barriers to pet care. So, not only are we making a difference in the lives of pets, but we’re making a difference in the lives of their people too. We truly provide access to quality care for all!
That’s what motivates our team every day—the mission. Our mission drives us because until animals are no longer put to sleep in shelters across Texas, there is still work to be done.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Those who know me would probably tell you my drive is what sets me apart from others. I just don’t take “no” for an answer. So, when I put my mind to something, I won’t quit until I figure out how to make it possible. There have been many helpmates in the growth of TCAP, and I work hard to have the best people around me at all times to give our mission the support it needs to continue, grow, and service the community at large.
Founding a nonprofit isn’t easy, and there have definitely been bumps along the way; however, the growth that TCAP has experienced throughout the past 21 years has been a testament to the hard work of the entire team, who are dedicated to ending pet euthanasia. Together we work hard to make a difference.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the downtown, metropolitan areas. Dallas and Fort Worth have very different, yet amazing, opportunities for folks to experience Texas. My favorites are downtown Fort Worth and the historic Stockyards! I love the cobblestone streets and the history of that area. There is so much to do and see there, and it’s very friendly for walking.
I’d suggest staying at the historic Stockyards Hotel or the new Drover Hotel because of their proximity to the action! A perfect day would start with brunch with mimosas at H3 and then shopping at some of the iconic stores and boutiques. After, there’s no way that I’d miss seeing the Longhorn steers walk the streets in the Stockyards. I’d end the day with, dinner at the incomparable Joe T. Garcia’s. Their food and service cannot be beaten, and the margaritas are next level, don’t forget that they only accept cash.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my team at TCAP. The staff and veterinarians work tirelessly every day so we can achieve our shared mission. They are the backbone of our organization, and without their belief in what we do, TCAP would not exist. We work hard each day to make a difference in our community and the lives of people and pets.
