We had the good fortune of connecting with Spencer Wharton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Spencer, what do you attribute your success to?
The willingness to jump in and out of business mode and the drop of a hat. Consistently working even when it’s not beneficial to me or I don’t really have time to be working.

Carefully curating the entire image, sonic experience, and of course finding the best players and friends to share the ride of being a musician with.

Ultimately when it comes down to it, having fun despite any hardships that may arise.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Staying the course and believing in my vision and the people I chose to play music. For most of my music career which has been almost a decade I’ve been playing with the same core group of people, keeping a consistent group of friends around me, and of course going into it with the mindset that I just want to make people smile and have a good time. The pursuit of happiness for myself and others, and consistency with the people around me I choose to work with are the two biggest keys to my success.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would be taking them on a club tour. Wits End, Armoury, Three Links in Dallas, the royalty of deep ellum, MASS and Lola’s in Fort Worth, and of course Andy’s, Dan’s Silverleaf, and Harvest House if we are in Denton. I’d have to show them the watering holes and hopefully grabbing some of the best music the country has to offer.

Music + good food and drinks. It’s the only life I’ve known and hopefully the only one I’ll ever have to.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother and father are the beginning of my story. My father showed me concert videos of The Rolling Stones and The Eagles and got me hooked on the idea that being in a band was something I wanted to do. My mother has been my rock before and after my dad died when I was 16. She has not always agreed with my choices, I’m positive she has listened to some of the songs I’ve produced and not enjoyed what she heard, but she never stopped loving me and encouraging me. Without both of them I wouldn’t be who I am today.
