We had the good fortune of connecting with Spencer Weaver and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Spencer, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that taking risks are absolutely imperative in any endeavour worth taking. And the honest truth is that it takes time and practice to even muster the courage to take that leap of faith. Whether it’s a huge move, a creative choice, or a financial investment, risks can and usually push you closer to where you need to be. Success does not exist without failure. I may fail. I HAVE failed. But we’re pretty damn durable as people so as to get up, recalobratre, and try again; hopefully having learned something. And as oxymoronic as it may sound, risks still need to be calculated and taken at the right time with the right resources.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am currently a bassist for the bands “JTE” and “King Booty Disco”. Both projects have both been incredibly fulfilling in their own right.

Having recently released our latest album “Heart Tapes” with JTE, I look back and realize just how much all 5 of us put into it! Yes, the music was fun to make but I think the most exciting aspects were the efforts made outside of that that let our weird, bizarre, personalities shine.

King Booty Disco is….interesting. I definitely had to step out of my comfort zone for this project just for namesake alone! But with a HUGE influence in 70’s Disco and funk, this band was right up my wheelhouse.

I’m also working on my own personal side project that has yet to be released. All I wanna say is that it includes a lot of weird, funky stuff like talkbox and euphoniums.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are plenty of venues with good music happening all the time in Dallas and Arlington. But for my own exploration, Denton has a little venue called Howling Mutt brewing that has such a good vibe and was such a good time when I played there.

We’re going to Maki Boy to eat everyday. No questions. Best sushi I have ever eaten (so far…).

I’m not much of a drinker myselfBUT when I do, it’s best at Dr. Jekyl’s beer lab in Arlington. The drinks are just about as interesting as the people there which is saying a lot!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I read the book “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron right after I graduated high school. There are too many concepts that changed me to mention but the core idea I grabbed was that our inner artist/creative is a child. We wouldn’t talk down to a child. This child wants to be loved and to be played with. It doesnt and shouldn’t have limits as to what it wants to imagine. This child will and should ask many questions. Everything is new and curiosity is the most empowering trait of this child.

There’s something whimsical, at least for me, that gets lost every so often the older I get. So every so often I have to realign and “nuture” my child by getting out of the weeds and try something different without the worry of whether it will “work” or not.
