We had the good fortune of connecting with Spencer McElway and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Spencer, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is essential to living a more purposeful life in my opinion. When I took the risk of deciding to go to college in another state to chase my dreams of playing basketball, it changed my life forever. The people I’ve met, bonds I’ve built, and memories I’ve made at Paul Quinn are so valuable because of their impact on the man I’ve become today. I built a name for myself and proved myself right when it came down to my goals and what I wanted to do in life. Taking risks has allowed me to find myself and grow comfortable with change. It led me to starting my professional basketball career overseas, and getting to see the world from a different perspective. My mind is so driven now to take more risks because I’ve already proved to myself that anything is possible.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always been an artist at heart. I believe the creative mind is an unlimited one. I’ve learned to be open and embrace trying new things and products. This has led me to being able to represent different brands with different products from Healthy Foods, to Clothing Brands and Recovery tools. I want the world to know that its never too late to at least try and do whatever it is you want to do. We only have one chance so why not make the best of it? In the end I want to be able to look back and say I did it all.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend were to visit and we had a week to explore, I would try to do so much because in Dallas there is TOO much to do. First I would take him to my favorite restaurants day in and day out. These include Hendersons Fried chicken, BuzzBrews, Twisted Root Burgers, Sweet Georgia Browns, and Southern Classic Daiquiri Factory. We would definitely have to check out downtown, uptown and deep ellum as there are plenty of bars restaurants and nightclubs to have a good time at. Maybe stop by a fee of the museums or national historical sites. Deep Ellum and Uptown Dallas is very fun at different times.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
