We had the good fortune of connecting with Spence Boales and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Spence, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My brand of fitness is not just a “let me help you look better in a swimsuit.” I am selling dreams, experiences and memories. Fighting an obesity epidemic and allowing people to interact and play with their kids, their grandkids and participating in activities that were not possible before. Spending true quality time with one another instead of being too tired, too out of breath or too sick directly related to preventable health issues.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Training and changing the human body truly is an art form. I am molding someone’s body by constantly changing the stresses put on it, and more importantly, molding their way of thinking over time. The two to three hours per week I get to physically interact with them pales in comparison to the one hundred or so they are awake, and outside of my guidance. The choices I steer them to make during those hours are vital to their success.
I have definitely traveled a path I would not recommend to others. Overcoming a drug addiction was no menial task. Although fitness alone did not get me sober, it was definitely a valuable tool in the process.
My addiction also instilled a certain empathy for those struggling with the main addiction I see in my line of work. I no longer have the “well just don’t eat that” mentality, and have become less impatient with others in their journey.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being new to Dallas, I am definitely still learning as well. But, we would definitely visit Paradigm gym, the best in Dallas. We would also hit the Sunday afternoon sand volleyball game at Bryan Street Tavern!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In a nutshell, everyone besides myself. God first. Second, my family. Namely, my grandfather who is a former coach and teacher, who taught me to care for and help others to the best of my ability. Just as importantly, my father who instilled in me a resilience and dicipline to always perform at my best.
