We had the good fortune of connecting with Sister Shalom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sister, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m originally from Atlanta, GA born and raised. My upbringing was centered around church; my family was heavily engaged in the church starting when I was just two years old. I sang at church growing up, and my sister, my cousin, and I started a rap group. We would write gospel rap songs and perform them at church. My mom was also a gospel artist; I sang background vocals for her when she performed at churches and events. So, singing, rapping, and making music is something I’ve been doing my whole life.
Being involved with ministry and music growing up is what built my foundation as an artist today. The church is where I learned the values and standards that I live according to. I stand on the Word of God and live my life according to the Word of God, and I make sure that can be perceived through my music. I pray my listeners appreciate the values behind my music and my prayer is that people will be drawn closer to the Word of God through my music.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
God blessed me with the gift of music and song, so music is the avenue I use to spread His Word. What sets me apart from others is that I’m not making music for entertainment, for popularity, or fame. I make music to minister the Word of God. I got to where I am professionally first and foremost by the grace of God because its only through Him that things are possible. Secondly, it took a lot of hard work and dedication to get to where I am. I had to make many sacrifices, but just understanding that what I’m doing is for the glory of God, it makes every sacrifice worth it.
It hasn’t been easy; I’ve had a lot of ups and downs as an artist. I’ve made good decisions as well as unwise ones. But no matter what happens, I continue to stay committed to my goals because the moment I begin to lose sight of my goals, that’s when things start to crumble. Challenges come with my music career and overall, in life in general. Nonetheless, I’ve overcome most of my challenges through prayer and having faith that everything will happen according to God’s plan. I’ve learned to become more patient because things don’t typically happen within the timeframe we expect them to happen in. But if we wait and have faith, things will always happen at the right time. It’s important for me to keep going no matter how hard things may get because as an artist, consistency is key.
Despite the challenges, I’ve learned to have more confidence in my ability to succeed. I’ve learned how to take the good with the bad and still stay encouraged through it all. I’ve learned to encourage myself each day whether things are going good or bad. When nothing is going right, or nothing seems promising, I keep going no matter what. I can’t lose sight of my purpose and the plan that God has placed over my life.
I stand on my values and my beliefs, and my brand is built on top of that foundation. I’m passionate about spreading the Word of God. I stand firm on the Word of God and my music is the premise of what I believe. I value making music that is valuable to other people, and I hope my music can be appreciated for the values of the Word of God.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love music, art, and fashion, so my ideal week in the city would consist of a lot of shopping and live entertainment. Some of my favorite malls to visit are Galleria Mall, North Park, and Willowbend Mall. A great place to eat southern soul food is Southern Gourmet Kitchen, which is in Plano near Willowbend Mall. The next day we would visit an art exhibit at the Perot Museum. Since we’ll already be in the city, The Vegan House would be a great bite to eat. After a quick wardrobe change, we would spend the evening enjoying a concert at the Dallas Symphony orchestra. The next day we would go on a sightseeing & history bike tour during the day. A great place for pizza near the city is Dallas Kosher Pizza, where they also have vegan pizza options. Later that evening we’ll head over to the American Airlines Stadium to watch a Mavericks game. After all the activities, we would end the week with a day of pampering at Spa Castle.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my sister, who is also a gospel artist. Her name is Perfect Peace the Singer, and she lives in Los Angeles, CA. I’m shouting her out because she has been one of my biggest supporters throughout my career. My whole family is supportive, but my sister has truly been a big help from a musical and artistic standpoint. Although she’s younger than me, I look up to her as a woman of God. Seeing her grow as a righteous woman of God has been an inspiration on my journey of becoming a woman of God. Her faith, strength, and endurance are humbling to behold. Her diligence inspires me to be more steadfast in my walk.
