We had the good fortune of connecting with Shenice Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shenice, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
To me finding balance in your home and career life is one of the most difficult things to do as a successful business owner. This is my 14th year as a hairstylist and my 7th year as a salon suite owner. i can finally say ” i got the hang of this”. I’m not 100% there, but I’m a great 92%. Emotionally, financially, and the overwhelming responsibility of fixing things when they demolish or break, i got that covered. The 8% i feel i still struggle with is the people management, personnel issues, and being able to give the same energy to my home that i give to work. I have found that when i schedule things I want to do, and I put it in my online booking site i am able to enjoy other things in life outside of my business. Date night, family time, girl time, and massages all go into my calendar, i make my home life just as important as my work life. I also take a day that i absolutely do not respond or answer to anything pertaining to the salon or clients. since I have done this my anxiety levels have had a significant decrease, and i know and feel i am on a great route to a healthy balance in my life and with work.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of Shecosmo hair salon and barbershop located in Plano Texas. When i was in my 7th year of being a Hairstylist at several different salons. I started to feel stuck. I then had the Opportunity to manage a barbershop. I was able pick up the skills and necessary knowledge to match my drive. That was all I needed plus a few people that I love dearly, that i knew would back me up and join the Team of Shecosmo. I feel that is what makes us different than most salon suites, we are family. My sister and farther are both independent contractors here as a stylist and Barber. Those that are not blood relatives, we have known for years and years to come and want the best for each other. That makes us family. With the pre planning and prebuying of equipment and other things, it was not as difficult for me to open the doors of Shecosmo ,as it was to keep the doors open. I would go to my grandfather for advice when i really got overwhelmed . My Grandaddy Howard would tell me, “It’s going to get hard and when it does go in the bathroom cry it out, call me if you need to . Then wipe your face “. “when you come out , evaluate the situation and handle the issue like a boss “. That got me through alot ,with out loosing my mind. I had alot of people depending on me to keep a safe ,reliable space for them to do their craft, and i could not fail. i had my first child my 2nd year of owning Shecosmo .My daughter past away shortly after and even through it put the darkest time over my life , it didnt stop me. i was broken but she inspired me. Now i am better then i have ever been and fully focused on the sucess of Shecosmo Hair salon and barbershop . I am proud to say this is our 7th year being open and we have 12 talented Individuals here ready to serve you .

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If someone was to come to Dallas, I would tell them to go find a spot next to the Margret hunt hill bridge and check out the Dallas skyline at night. I have always enjoyed a beautiful view; my favorite night club would be sandagas 813. I absolutely love the love jones vibe they give on the inside, then if u want the turn up Dj music and great BBQ, outside in their backyard is it. I recently went to xoxo restaurant, talk abo9ut a camera-ready place. They have the most gorgeous backgrounds anyone would want to take photos here and eat. We have a lot of hidden Jem places here that a person could stay for hours just socializing and vibing,
